"Who Am I" by BadNews
Posted at 3/17/2007 02:27:00 PM
Lets be honest, hip hop will never be veiwd as positive music even back in the day critics thought the sugarhill gang was a negative influence. But now over 30 years of life, will hip hop have a chance to prove its not as negative as it is? Now let me coach it out for a second. If I was hip hop's Pat Riley and I need my starting five to prove to the world were not all about violence, bitches, and drugs, who would I send out? Do I send out the laid back, break dancing 80's era rappers, or do I send out the ghetto reporters if you will. You know the rappers who tell it like it is, how it really goes down in the hood. Or what about the "pop" rappers? The crossover artists that give the looks of a Jo Jo, or a Christina Aguilera street cred. But what if I can't be a Hip Hop Pat Riley? What if there isn't any players that exist? What if there is no game that exist?
Are we really the anti social, greedy, genre of music that's obsessed with money cars clothes and hos? Well in my opinion is country music has its chevy pickups and cowboy boots. Heavy metal has its headbanging and trashed hotel rooms. Hip hop has its 26 inch rims and its bling bling (aka the bling blao Yao Ming put me up on game with that). Its our identity this is how we are recognized. Now I admit its probably not as appealling to the critics but its what we have it seperates us. So next time you hear a report about rap music making two year olds smoke weed, or a car got blown up over hip hop, just laugh it off and press play on your ipod or radio stations and keep hip hop alive shoot I just pulled my pants down and put my stunnas on while I was typing this, I'm so Pharrell. Lol.

Dr.Teeth to Appear on BET's Most Popular Shows
Posted at 3/17/2007 02:12:00 PM
Acclaimed video director John D. Tucker, known to most as Dr. Teeth, recently appeared as a special guest for judge on B.E.T's 106 & Park's Freestyle Friday segment, airing Friday, March 16 at 6p.m. ET/PT, and on Rap City during the Director's Chairsegment, airing on and Monday March 19 at 5p.m. ET/PT. The segments spotlight the director's career as well as upcoming projects.
As a former senior producer for B.E.T., these recent appearances were more of a homecoming than a guest feature. "After I graduated from college I went to work for B.E.T. and they gave me an opportunity to grow," Tucker explains. During his tenure with B.E.T. he produced the award-winning youth program, "Teen Summit," and created BET's urban superhero character "Ghetto Man" for the ever-popular program "Hits from the Streets." He was also the senior producer for "Rap City," the longest running daily hip-hop show on television (now in its 14th season); playing a significant role in the redevelopment of BET's "Rap City" into "Rap City Tha Bassment." His poignant contribution to the show, "The Booth" quickly became a rights of passage for all visiting M.C's on the show.
Dr. Teeth initially gained notoriety for bringing the Houston Hip Hop Movement to life. Creating visuals for songs by rappers such as Mike Jones, Slim Thug and Paul Wall made the Cincinnati native a household name. In 2005 his video "Still Tippin" was nominated for an MTV2 VMA People's Choice Award, and in 2006 he was nominated for the Director of the Year Award for the inaugural B.E.T. Hip Hop Awards. His body of work is not exclusive to the hip-hop genre, but spans to include R&B as well as Rock & Roll. Tucker's videography includes projects for such artists as T.I., soul singer Cruna and rock legends Kings X.

Messy Marv readies for 2 new albums
Posted at 3/16/2007 04:26:00 PM
This spring a Bay Area legend is taking it back to his neighborhood, literally. San Francisco rapper, Messy Marv, will release two separate albums representing the split between his hometown neighborhoods, Fillmore AKA "Fillmoe", a district in the San Francisco/Bay Area.
Messy Marv has been a staple in the West Coast rap scene for years. He has released 13 independent albums, and recently put out his first release on Scalen LLC/SMC recordings/Fontana. The album, which also served as a soundtrack for his movie release, was titled Draped Up and Chipped Out (Dress sharp with lots of money) and was a big hit this past summer.
Messy Marv helped put Fillmore on the map along with other Bay Area legends: San Quinn, Rappin' 4-Tay, GLP and JT The Bigga Figga. Sadly “Fillmoe” has gained negative recognition recently with an ongoing turf war between the “Uptown” and “Downtown” districts. Violence has escalated dramatically between the two neighborhoods and unfortunately many lives have been lost in this “war”.
By releasing his upcoming albums, Fillmoe Nation Vol. 1 (release date March 20th) and Fillmoe Nation Vol. 2 (release date April 3rd), Messy's goal is to try to show unity between the two neighborhoods, to bring the two sides together and stop this “war”. “I have seen people I grew up with killed in this violence and I want to play my part by trying to help the community. I decided to make these albums so I could show not only SF and Fillmoe what is happening in our communities, but also the country - the violence that happens in our neighborhoods everyday and the need to stop it,” explains Messy.
The albums, being released on SMC Recordings, will hit streets this spring, two weeks apart. Volume 1 will represent the “Uptown” district while Volume 2 will represent the “Downtown” district. On previous albums Messy called upon his famous colleagues such as E-40 and Keak Da Sneak to make appearances, this time around Messy made the decision to showcase local neighborhood/community based rappers from both sides of Fillmore. Messy states, “I wanted to give people that had not had their shot, an opportunity to express themselves, I wanted to put them on, give them a chance.”
Not only has Messy given a rare opportunity to local talent to be showcased on two nationally released albums, he has also decided to donate some of the proceeds from both albums to local gyms/community centers in both the “Uptown” and “Downtown” districts. This in turn will bring much-needed computers and other learning tools to the kids in both neighborhoods.
Messy Marv is determined to continue breaking his Scalen LLC brand with up coming projects. Gutta Mob & Jessica Rabbit are scheduled for a late spring/early summer release as well as Messy's long awaited new solo album.

MUSIC | VIDEOS | INTERVIEWS | NEW ARTIST | HOME"For The Love Of Musiq" Exclusive Interview by Simply C
Posted at 3/15/2007 01:42:00 PM
Who doesn't remember the summer of 2000, leaning over the hot coals of a BBQ pit trying to get a juicy piece of chicken. Laughing at your uncle cause he told everybody that your aunt's potato salad could kill roaches. Dodging bad butt kids nodding your head to some cat blowing over the jam box. Who is that? Right then listening to "Just Friends" took you right back to the first time you ever jocked somebody hard and even more it introduced you to the man named Musiq. He's been changing the game with his soulful voice and profound lyrics ever since. If you haven't heard his new cd has dropped yesterday. As all of Musiq's cd this is an eclectic banga, something for heart and a whole lot for the soul. Speaking of which I had the utmost pleasure of catching up with him while preparing the release of his fourth album"LuvandMusiq".Simply C: So what's been going on with you lately? We've missed you on the Music scene.
Musiq: Trying to keep myself up really, I just had the label switch from Def Jam to Atlantic so we worked out that whole deal. You know focusing on my future.
Simply C: That's cool; your fans really missed you. For real I think my "Soulstar" disc has seen it's last days. Why the wait?
Musiq: Feels good to be missed (laughing). Man if I had it my way I would have put out?.what like two cd?s a year. But you have to understand how things work with the business. There is a certain time that may be best to put your cd out. Now happens to be my time.
Simply C: Ok there is Musiq and then there is Musiqsoulchild, MusiqSoulstar. What's up with that?
Musiq: I'm still MusiqSoulchild. I started out attempting to explain the purpose behind the name with each album. You know it'll keep going until I feel like I've gotten are who I am.
Simply C: This is so off topic but, I've seen you perform at a club in Charlotte awhile back. You were so laid back on and off stage. Talking to you now I'm like this is a cool cat. How do you stay so grounded?
Musiq: Thanks, I've experienced a lot of things in life. You know, ups and downs all of that stuff like everyone else. I'm always looking to learn about whatever it is I'm focused on because I don't know it all. So it serves you better to be humble as a person.
Simply C: Some more randomness. What's the hot item with you right now?
Musiq: Um I don't know.
Simply C: Come on the gear you wear is so hot you gotta love that!
Musiq: I don't even pick that stuff out! (Laughing) Half the time I'm like 'I?m not wearing that mess man!
Simply C: Dang you had me fooled your clothes look like they reflect your personality really? I'm shocked. Well as long as you don?t bust out wearing a kilt and a blazer it's cool.
Musiq: That would be cool I'm gonna get into more of what's my style soon. I want to rep all ethnicities with my gear...so I might.
Simply C: Whoa dude just don't go commando with the kilt aight.
Musiq: Oh man, I won't be doing that!
We've laughed, cried, even fought over Musiq works that seem to be the soundtrack of relationships and life. Even the most sophsicated of taste can't deny this man's ability to capture a feeling with his songs be it on the giving end or receiving. Visit his official website:www.musiqsoulchild.com, www.atlanticrecords.com/musiqsoulchild, and myspace.com/musiqsoulchild. You can cop "LuvandMusiq" at any major record store as well as on line at sites like Amazon, and Itunes no bootlegging please. Aight people I'm going to finish listening to "LuvandMusiq" Holla!
Shoutouts to Musiq and Amanda at Atlantic for making this happen!

"Top 5 Reasons Why Hip Hop Is Considered Dead" by Queen Princess
Posted at 3/15/2007 01:09:00 PM
In the year 2007, it is likely to hear people talk of the long awaited Hip-Hop album releases and who’s really hot. Though with almost an equal amount of negative characteristics to Hip-Hop, it is also likely to often hear a simple three lettered phrase, “Hip-Hop is dead.” Now, this doesn’t mean go throw Nas and Jay in the bin, it just means that the art is due for a major repair. There are a number of reasons as to why people turn away from today’s mainstream Hip-Hop, and these are my top 5 reasons.
#5 Over population
The music industry is overflowing with new artists from every corner of the world, and countless musicians are being signed on a daily bases. It is guaranteed that every hood, suburb and major city from every state has some rapper representing a specific area code. There’s the addition of our legendary Hip-Hop artists trying to make crazy comebacks. Then, there are also the artists who just linger. It’s one thing to consecutively drop hot albums, but when they start sounding way off tune, it’s time to take a break and think things over. And don’t forget about those artists who intentionally make one hit just to get a little money. These are the ones who are just taking up space.
#4 It Just doesn’t Bang!
Sometimes, only sometimes can rappers get away with an album based solely on beats. People may say the album deserves a hearty “boo” and two thumbs down, while others may appreciate the way their speakers bang when they’re driving around town. Anyway, if your sound system is on point, you can’t even hear the lyrics. There are times when the artists’ lyrics may be up to par, but if the flow or the beats aren’t there. No heads are nodding, no physical action is taken, no bounce, not even an occasional hand clap. In short, it just doesn’t bang!
#3 Mediocrity/similarity
Okay, so you have a collection a CD’s. They’re by different artists and you like them all the same. Though when you play the best 3 or 4 songs on each CD, there really is no variety in the sound. Hip-Hop is a viscous game and when it comes to solid 5 mic albums, it becomes hard to compete. The rap game has been tricking consumers for quite sometime now. An artist releases the first single produced by one of the big time hit makers, and it gets major radio play and club spins. The second single is a slow jam aimed at the ladies. This one blows up too, but only for a minute. Now, the artist almost has you. He/she waits to drop the CD, because they might not m
