Joell Ortiz Vol 1. Sec. 1: "I Know Y’all Ain’t Sleep, The Chronicles" by Queen Princess
Posted at 1/18/2008 12:39:00 PM
In 2007 Joell Ortiz broke out from the back of a Brooklyn bodega and stepped up to the brim of the mainstream game. Thousands of people were finally able to view and identify with his songs and videos. One video, Brooklyn Bulls***t pays homage to his hometown and pretty much follows a “You know you’re from Brooklyn if” type scheme with relatable honest lyrics. In 2004 Ortiz was featured in The Source Magazine and was chosen as the next best thing by XXL. He’s been received over seas in the U.K. and the Latino community as well. Ortiz himself is Puerto Rican and sheds light on his culture at any given opportunity. He’s known for his song 125 grams where he free styled 125 bars of fire no hook in between. There’s no question whether or not this dude is committed, because he passed up the opportunity to go to college on an athletic and academic scholarship. At the time he was dealing with some problems. His mother was using drugs and he stayed behind to help her get better, but now it’s his time to make himself better. He’s already worked with hip-hop heavyweights such as KRS-One, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane. The buzz is growing so be on the lookout for Ortiz on a tube near you.
The Snooze Blocker
These bars were taken from a freestyle that Ortiz spit on a television program called Freestyle 101.
“Now who want it with Mr. Joell Christopher Ortiz Boy Please, you’re softer than your sister’s Barbie I’m harder than a custom Harley With the handle bars higher than Damian Marley. You’re as simple as the first Atari”
The Alarm Clock
The first video “Hip-Hop” was on his debut album The Brick (Bodega Chronicles), released last spring. Even though he’s signed to Aftermath Records he got the okay to release the album on Koch. The second video is Ortiz’s latest effort. He is currently working on his new album to be released this year.

MUSIC | VIDEOS | INTERVIEWS | NEW ARTIST | HOMEPezo in Da Cribb of Hot 107.9 launches "Make It Rain Da Hood" Campaign
Posted at 1/17/2008 09:51:00 PM
In the urban community, making it rain in the club by tossing hundreds to thousands of dollars into the air has become somewhat of a pastime hobby or a street sport so to speak. Living in a hip-hop culture that glorifies popping champagne bottles in VIP and lacing a club with more money than most people make in a month or perhaps even a year, it has become apparent that our priorities are severely distorted.Enter Pezo In Da Cribb from Atlanta ’s Hot 107.9, with his Make It Rain In Da Hood campaign. The Virginia native challenges a different celebrity each week to share their time and financial blessings with the disadvantaged in neighborhoods where every little bit counts; and being that it’s a new year, he felt there was no better time to focus his attention on uplifting those in and around his community who are underprivileged.
The idea for Make It Rain in Da Hood spawned after Pezo In Da Cribb heard the lyrics of Andre 3000 from the song “Art of Storytelling Pt. 4” from DJ Drama's debut, Gangsta Grillz: The Album. Pezo In Da Cribb then decided to enlist some of the biggest names in hip-hop to help him turn his charitable dream into a reality.
Platinum recording artist Yung Joc joined Pezo In Da Cribb in a highly populated homeless area in downtown Atlanta during the holiday season where the duo freely handed out money to needy and unsuspecting citizens. Their generosity proved to be overwhelming, as the crowd roared with praise and cheers as they left.
Since its November inception, Make It Rain In Da Hood has made a tremendous buzz on the Internet. With over a thousand hits on the #1 video sharing website, You Tube (www.youtube.com) and thousands of views per day from the Hot 107.9 website (www.hot1079atl.com), Make It Rain In Da Hood is clearly an outreach program that people want to see become a national movement.
Make It Rain In Da Hood is not only about passing out dollar bills to those in need, but it's also about your money making a difference in a person's life, which in turn brings personal satisfaction. Pezo In Da Cribb will continue his campaign each week with future plans to give away various items such as food, shoes, toiletries and clothing.

"I Know Y’all Ain’t Sleep: The Chronicles" by Queen Princess
Posted at 1/17/2008 09:37:00 PM
What’s good hiphopruckus? It’s been a minute I know. I’ve been gone for a while, but now it’s a new time, a new day and a new year, so it’s all good. Last year we had lots of breakout groups and artists of which many were overlooked. Some artists got a few shot outs in the media, but those who didn’t have a hit radio single were shorted of their limelight. So…I Know Y’all Ain’t Sleep: The Chronicles is dedicated to those artists and things who deserve some extra recognition. Sometimes electronics, clothes/shoes, books and movies can be slept on as well, so occasionally you’ll see other things included in these here chronicles.
The Snooze Blocker:
With that said I decided to come up with a little section that RE-highlights artists/things that are making moves, but are still being slightly overshadowed. As we all know when you’re sleeping on somebody or something you’re not really paying attention and acknowledging their/its potential. In this section (the snooze blocker), I’ll throw a few bars or facts at you to prevent you from hitting the snooze button.
The Alarm Clock:
In this portion I’ll show you what’s best about what I’m trying to sell you. Well you actually don’t have to buy anything. In the alarm clock portion I’m really just encouraging you to take a second look or reconsider throwing the artist/thing to the side before you’ve seen more of what they’re/it’s actually worth. So again with that that said, put the pillows away!!

Afeni Shakur to be honored in upcoming Multi-Media Expo
Posted at 1/16/2008 09:27:00 PM
The Tupac Amaru Center for the Arts (TASCA) proudly announces a pair of artistic offerings entitled Afeni Shakur: In Her Defense, detailing Shakur's arrest as a member of the Black Panthers, and culminates in her acquittal on all 156 felony charges in the Trial of the Panther 21. The first part of the multimedia experience known as In Her Defense, is a gallery exhibition (February 1 - March 28, 2008) highlighting the events as they unfolded over the course of two years (1969 -1971), in which a courageous young woman defended herself against an over-zealous court system. The play, In Her Defense premieres February 22nd, and brings to life the events in a more interactive form; the two artistic endeavors aim to shed light on the power of one woman to overcome insurmountable obstacles in her quest for freedom. In 1969, Afeni Shakur was arrested alongside other members of the renegade civil rights activist group the Black Panthers. The group was arraigned on over 156 differing charges associated with conspiring to destroy New York City department stores, subway stations, and police stations. At the time of her arrest, Shakur waived her rights to a lawyer, opting to serve as her own legal counsel. Known as The Trial of the Panther 21, the case captured the nation's headlines, and would hold the distinction at the time, of being the longest and most expensive political trial in the state of New York. Over the course of two years, Shakur would be incarcerated while awaiting her trial, released on bail numerous times, only to return to her jail cell carrying an unborn child. Shakur would ultimately prevail against the legal system, acquitted of all charges just over a month before the birth of her son ... Tupac Amaru Shakur.
On display from February 1 - March 28, 2007, In Her Defense the gallery installation is a collection of photographs, court transcripts, and television news footage documenting the courtroom drama. Amassed from numerous primary sources, including Shakur's own private collection, the documents include portions of the oral transcripts from the trial - her opening and closing arguments. The exhibit also features original television news coverage (from 1969-1971) anchored by CBS' Walter Cronkite, among other broadcast journalists.
Providing the panache only afforded in theater, In Her Defense the short play dramatizes the historical events in three scenes. Using the court transcripts, supplemented by a fictional account of Shakur's time behind bars, the play is a one-woman show supplemented by Pac's Kids performers in the roles of the other co-defendants.
In Her Defense is not just a reflection on Afeni Shakur's struggle, but a celebration of the enduring strength of the human spirit. Documenting an important time in the African American experience and the civil rights movement, it seems natural to open the gallery exhibit on the first day of Black History Month. Additionally, the exhibit continues through the end of March, to encompass Women's History Month and commemorate the conviction of one glorious woman.
The gallery exhibit is free and open to the general public. Admission to the play is $15 for adults and $10 for students. Both the Play and Exhibit will be at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts (TASCA), located at 5616 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, GA 30083.

"Shawty Lo: “Units In The City” Listenin’ Party" by The Beast
Posted at 1/16/2008 09:08:00 PM
Held at “Rock Me TV Studio” in Manhattan - the event was meant to give music insiders a taste of the release from his first solo effort called "Units In The City" off the D4L imprint.
With an array of spectators in attendance, Shawty Lo finally came out to the crowd after spending a great bit of time doing a live studio interview at the lounge. Once the mic was amped up, he gave the crowd a sample of the album with “Dunn, Dunn” followed by a nasty dose of the hit single "Dey Know." The Atlanta native performed on site with his posse, which by the way, all wore dark shades to match the aura of the MC.
After hearing enough songs, it was definitely obvious that this was no “snap” album or rapper.
Although his image comes off as more of a street hustla turned rapper, than a snap rapper unlike his group members from D4L, he clearly dismisses fabricated rumors that D4L has broken up on his mixtape , “I’m Da Man 2” with DJ Scream.
I can’t give the album a rating because I haven’t heard it all yet, but if Shawty Lo manages to pump out another smash hit like “Dey Know,” this might be something special.“Units In The City” features 15 tracks with guest appearances from Gucci Mane and Stuntman. The album drops Feb. 26th and will be distributed by Asylum.
