"Nike Goadome VS The Classic Timberland" by The Beast
Posted at 1/12/2008 07:10:00 AM
Outside of NYC it's not as big, but inside of NYC... it is major. Nike Goadome boots are a dominant force and they mean business. Since their emergence on the scene, you’d be hard-pressed to hear some one say that they didn’t like them. For their worthy competitor and long time elder, The Classic Timberland boot, it’s been a quiet story. Timb’s have history though, and they remain a favorite in the streets but haven’t exactly managed to counter the appeal that Nike has placed on its share of the outdoor market. Timb’s haven’t been around that long. The first official Timberland was made in 1965 and NYC wouldn’t get a taste of the maker until the mid ‘90s. Before Timb’s were branded popular, urban boots like Doc Martens or Karl Kani's were the style of choice.
But of course by the time Timberland’s stepped on the scene, they had made an emphatic impact on the Hip-Hop culture. They we’re different and if you had them, then you were “in.” Over the years Timb’s have become a pillar of the New York landscape and Hip-Hop lifestyle. Thanks to the Field Boot and the introduction to “Beef and Broccoli,” “Macaroni and Chess” and others, Timb’s rang out the late 90’s and early millennium with an infectious slang that referenced the many colors that were offered by the maker. This was strategic marketing and thanks to your favorite rapper and mass retailers, Timb’s where highly visible and unmatched by those trying to compete during that time. The examples are: Averix, Lugs, Fila, Reebok and Durango’s.
Of course we all know that Nike started in the early sixties and has been the world leader in sports merchandising for decades now, but I bet you didn’t know that the ACG (All Condition Gear) was launched in 1989. The ACG was Nike’s finger on the outdoor guy or girl playing in aggressive alternative sports like rock climbing and hiking. ACG's products were never major sellers like Jordan’s or Air Penny’s but it’s apparent now that Nike saw a niche to transform those sales numbers in 05/06 with Goadome. The praise of this outdoor boot from Nike, compared to other boots has never been so great. Not only are they fly, but like everyone says... “their mad comfortable.” This one feature alone separates Goadome from Timberland in leaps and bounds. I would much rather have something on comfortable and stylish than something that numbs my big toe after walking 10 blocks.
While the Goadome my be stylish, Timb’s are a franchise. You can be 17 or 50 and the Timb’s are ok. A franchise is a money maker. You know that no matter what, Timb’s will sell and styles fade. Goadome’s are fly and stylish at the same time, but styles will be replaced. It’s happening now… when I walk down some streets in Brooklyn and Manhattan, I see people wearing Goadome’s in crazy loud colors like Rainbow Red or Ass wipe Green. I shake my head because it reflects Nike’s designers’ lack of creativity, which has been criticized often over the years. For some people, the colors are good but more often than not, many would prefer a crisp all black pair with maybe a little something different. For example, Nike could offer a pair with Italian leather or a new model with straps. The loud blue and red colors are ridiculous. So a word of advice to Nike… stick to the basics, build on the momentum because New Yorkers get bored quick. Timberlands are forever or until the company goes under.

MUSIC | VIDEOS | INTERVIEWS | NEW ARTIST | HOMECatch Tavis Smiley's interview with Lupe Fiasco!
Posted at 1/09/2008 09:41:00 PM
Known for thought-provoking lyricism, Lupe Fiasco is a Chicago native and devout Muslim who was exposed to many different cultures as a child. He began taking his craft seriously at age 17 and went from underground phenomenon to mainstream success with his Grammy nominated debut album "Food & Liquor." Lupe Fiasco just released his latest album "The Cool" and talks about it tonight (1/9/09).Lupe Fiasco discusses the importance of the lyrics in his new album, “TheCool”, and how he tries to bring serious issues such as rape and drug abuse into his music while keeping it “radio friendly.” Lupe Fiasco discusses how the lyrics for songs like 'Intruder' and 'Superstar' may be very dark, but the music remains “mainstream.” This helps to keep doors open and allows his music more radio airplay. He also stresses the importance of accepting the responsibility for his music and lyrics.
For information on show times go to www.pbs.org/tavissmiley. Transcripts and audio podcast will also be available on the website.
You can also check out a preview of the interview on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BaDG42lXMw.

Exclusive AudioIn staying with the independent vibe, yo I got this nice track by the sultry sista reppin' the BK, Shania D. Her peoples just sent me this laid back joint called "BK Knights". Very chill for a Wednesday night and a blast back to '86-92. Yo, when I heard her joint I was like "She runs me in the line of the female from Digible Planets". Dope kid, good display of lyricism if you ask me. Oh, check out this nice press release on Shania (See Below) and while you're at it, show homegirl some love and hit her up on the myspace tip at myspace.com/shaniad... This is definitely my shit
"BK Knights" (click to listen)
Shania D (Queen of Dope)
Emerging from a higher plane in lotus position 'pon a digital cotton candy cloud Shania D. flashes a conspiring smile to Angelic comrades, and illuminates the populace with rainbow ether. Giving high energy innovation Shania D. is well known to her fans and collaborators as a human dynamo full of surprises that come delivered in technicolored wrapping with a sparkling smile, and often a message well-extended, sans the preachy emptiness some are plagued with when faced with the same task.
It should be no surprise if you know her.
The vitality that flows through her energy is an authentic celebration of life that pours forth in an almost blinding, and certainly unforgettable stream of light, offered to us without pretense, from a kind of aquarian halo that mixes positive energy with lush digital soundscapes designed to inspire and move the crowd of listeners. Sponsored by Luxurie of LRG, she is a force that promises to shine long into the musical night, having had music on her mind since the age of 5, when she penned her first rhymes.
After sharing the stage with the exalted likes of Umar Bin Hussan of The Last Poets, MC Lyte, Goapele, Dead Prez, J Davey, Spinderella, Vikter Duplaix, and other glowing entertainers, Shania D has prepared a treat for the fans in an EP entitled "Geneva", which will drop in the Spring of 2008. A sneak peek airing of the project will be available at WMC 2008 where limited edition vinyl will be distributed. Until then you can find online material from Shania D.'s masterminding in the new Reggae Mixtape 'Lighters', and 'Adults Only' which features unreleased tracks from the delicious likes of Spasty Tasty and Solution Salutation.
"Music is a medium that can transcend all musical and social boundaries," Shania offers.
It's important for her that she sparks the inclination for individuals to become involved and participate in their collective experience, while also nurturing their identities. Knowing the value of following a dream, and investing the energy that internal notions and desires demand, she infuses hope and a reiteration that life is meant to be lived with an awakened heart. To this extent a forthcoming inspirational book that offers a framework for taking inspired steps in one's dharmic direction has been penned by the femcee.
Graduating from the Institute of Audio Research in Greenwich Village, she's become an accomplished audio engineer/producer, emcee/singer, and DJ. She is currently scoring a documentary for John Woo, and has been a dynamic force in many successful collaborations with acclaimed underground flavor.
We know her as a tastemaker, musical phenom, inspirational scribe, and unusually masterful Jill of all trades. Her EP is timely and promises to answer the call that inevitably came when she graced the ears of the masses with the golden lining of startlingly eclectic and we daresay beautiful musical dimensions.
