Broken Tapes Vol. 2 - "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik"

Believe it or not, Dre and Big Boi actually had a few albums before “Ms. Jackson.” I know that many of you are like, “Nah homie! Stankonia was their first shit! Trust me!” SLAP!! Shut up. Back in like ’93, ’94 when I was runnin’ shit at Chess King and most of you were still learning how to tie your laces, the West was running hip hop with crazy competition from New York and a few ill ass dudes from Jersey. (What up, Funk Doc??) It wasn’t like today when the South is winning consistently and the rest of the nation is trying to figure out the secret recipe. (Can I tell you? Unity… Novel concept, I know!)

Dre and Big Boi caught my ear with “Player’s Ball” which was actually recorded as a Christmas song for a LaFace Records compilation and the video was directed by ya boy Diddy. When you listen to it, you can hear the Santa references and the sleigh bells. It’s funky though. They passed it off as a slumper with no problemo. I was hooked. I heard them when I was living in the Yay on the world famous Wake Up Show with Sway and Tech. Dre was one of the dopest freestylers back then. Big Boi had to refine his skills but was cool regardless. If you remember that era at all, it was about the cipher and rules of engagement on that radio show were “Freestyle or leave in a box.” I remember, Sway!! HAHA.

With Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, the ATLiens (before that album too!) came hard off of their lead single and released this classic. I had this joint on cassette and had a hard time deciding which one got more play; this one, Only Built…, or Bizarre Ride to the Pharcyde. Outkast really kicked in the door. I know there was always ‘Face and the Geto Boys, 2 Live Crew and others really representing the south but Outkast put their foot all in it with this one. They had the Dungeon Family with them (Goodie MoB, Organized Noize) and really made the world take notice. By the way, if you never heard “Soul Food” by Cee Lo and crew, you’re missing out on an album that would thump today the way it did 15 years ago… Seriously…

As for Southernplayistic… Dre was still a b-boy, rockin' jerseys and reppin' the A all day and hadn't released his funky, eclectic, genius, inner-identities. Big Boi was Big Boi and you can't change that, like Ray Parker said. Then, of course, you had the muzik... You had back to back hits. They had the title track and the motivation anthem, “Git Up, Git Out” with the Goodie MoB. My favorite shits on this one though are still “Crumblin’ Erb” and “Hootie Hoo.” Back before having a cd deck in your shit was the norm, but rather a tape deck and a cd changer was ballerific, I played these two tracks ALL day back to back. Me and my homie P rode through the streets of San Jose, cruisin’ Santa Clara Blvd., got harassed by the cops and spit freestyles on the corner with ‘Kast rhymes fresh on our brains. Dre had so much command on the mic spittin’ at us like, “Now playing these bitches is my favorite sport but ain’t no game when they be calling your name in the court. Oh, it’s Saturday night. I guess that makes it all right. Got a obese 20 sack, fully packed. It’s so tight that it’s bustin’ out the seams. Yes sir, I’m set. Oh but let me tuck the 380 before I jet. Hops off in the ‘Lac with Bigg Gipp. You gotta light? Communication device done went off twice…”

I kicked off my series with one of the best two-man groups ever and continue it with the best two man group that everybody’s heard of since Run and Darryl Mac! I know that most people on the street never heard of an EPMD or a Phife Dog & Q-Tip, but goddamn they all know Andre 3000 and Daddy Fat Sacks! Rightfully so. Their first two albums were the best of their careers to me thus far but I’ll be a fan forever. So original and ballsy to not cater to the G-Funk sound or the RZA trends of the time. You can’t do anything but applaud them and admire them for their style and now their longevity. Tell me one Outkast record that is considered a flop? Shit, this one even went to #20 on the Billboard charts and won them Best New Group in 1995 at the Source Awards. Let me know when they come back. I’ll be sleeping until then… (Insert snore sound here…)

See you next week... Who's up next?? Could he continue with Dynamic Duos?? Could be. Who's dope on the West Coast from that same era that had a double-representation of skill on the mic?? You tell me! Shiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Hoootie Hooooooooooooo,

FLO
