BadNews Interviews the "Fat Mack"...Eightball!!

Posted at

Man, i'm really running out of cool intro lines and all, but forget all that. Read the title. It say's "BadNews interviews the 'Fat Mack"...Eightball". It is what it is. For those who don't know, maybe if you're living in South Dakota (Ha, Ha, Ha...), he's 1/2 of the legendary Hip Hop duo Eightball and MJG. Being from the dirty, I grew up listening to him and M spit for years, before BadBoy when he was with Suave House Records with Tela and em. True! Anyways, my man's, Badnews, sat down with Eightball to discuss some thangs which I think you'll like to read. Check it out!!-Destro

Badnews: How do you manage to stay current in hip hop? You been doing this thing for years?

8Ball: (pauses) I don’t know… I just do me. (Pauses again)… I tried to answer this question so many times in the past and even up to now; I still don’t know (laughs) I just do me. I just do what I feel.

Badnews: (laughs) Ok, I am going to try and ask you something no one else has (laughs)… In 2002 you signed to Bad Boy records, and you currently run your own label 8 ways Entertainment. Did you feel you had to fall back for a little while on running 8 Ways so you could meet your demands for Bad Boy label?

8Ball: Yeah sometimes. You got to go with the main attraction. I mean we have a major deal and requirements and goals to meet. But Bad Boy helped the label out a lot of ways as far as attracting attention to it. Other Bad Boy artists help a lot with getting the name out there too.

Badnews: Alright that’s good deal right there.

8Ball: (laughs)

Badnews: Now you’re not the only southern artists on Bad Boy, you have (Gorilla) Zoe, Yung Joc and the Boyz in Da Hood team, and of course it started out with a lot of New York artists. Well around ’01, ’02 the south was really starting to blow up on the mainstream… the same time you and MJG were signed. Did you feel at some point that this was one of Diddy’s moves to stay current by signing southern artists? You know like striking while the irons hot?

8Ball: I mean yeah definitely. He’s a business man, a real, real good business man (laughs). He knows what he’s doing. But Bad Boy South wasn’t really on his mind until after me and MJ (MJG) got there. It wasn’t even established like it is now. But he knows what he wants from his artists and that’s the sound he wants Bad Boy to make.

Badnews: Ok. Now there’s one notable point were you worked with Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. What drew you into rock music?

8Ball: Just growing up in Memphis. Memphis is a music city, there’s the underground Hip Hop scene, a bigger Blues scene and there’s a real big underground Rock scene that me and MJG have always been into. I love to rock out sometimes. I love guitars and live music. That’s what helps me gravitate to alternative and rock.

Badnews: Are there any current alternative artists that you would want to work with?

8Ball: (pauses) Aww man (laughs)….. I mean right now I would work with My Chemical Romance I like there work I got them in the deck right now. My favorite song on there album is number 13 I don’t know the name of the song but I blast number 13, that’s my song (laughs) it’s in the truck I'm telling you. I don’t know anyone else… but I would work with whoever

Badnews: (laughs) I don’t doubt you. Ok Now there was the smash hit you and MJG were on by the name of “Stay Fly” featuring 3-6 Mafia, Crunchy Black and Young Buck who all hail from your state Tennessee. How did that come together I mean, I can’t really think of any other artists that were born in one state and topped the charts like that. Maybe New York. And California.

8Ball: Well me and DJ Paul always wanted to work together and we did work with them on some songs unofficially you know the song “Gangsta Walk” produced by David Banner, but Paul and J (Juicy J) said they got this track and Young Buck was on it and asked us if we wanted to get down on it. I didn’t expect the recode to blow up I mean were talking about smoking weed (laughs) I didn’t expect the record to go that far.

Badnews: (laughs) I did and to honestly keep it real I wasn’t really feeling 3-6 mafia until I heard that sippin' on some sizzurp (laughs) its just there tone and the bass lines those dudes are pros

8Ball: Yeah the masses finally caught on (laughs)

Badnews: (laughs)… Alright we all seen UGK get the "Living Legend” award at the Ozone Awards. Did you feel like you got snubbed? I been hearing from some people you did

8Ball: No. it was there time. They have a hot single, a hot double album, they got what they deserved. There hot right now, that’s the whole purpose of the awards our singles didn’t do well like there’s---

Badnews: True, but there some people/ fans out there that really think you got snubbed for the certain fact that there hot RIGHT NOW…

8Ball: I mean I don’t want to hurt our fans feelings, but they deserved it. We had an excellent album, but there album is great.

Badnews: You’re a humble dude (laughs)… Now Tennessee is known for blues, did you ever try your hand in it?

8Ball: No not as a bluesman (laughs) but me and MJ definitely made a form of hip hop blues. Were kind of like the bluesmen of rap. During our whole career we had a whole of downs and some ups. Our songs and lyrics sound real bluesy we intergrated alot of that sound into rap.

Badnews: Ok, who do you listen to now?

8Ball: OH! Just so you know I’m not lying… (He puts me on hold and turns up his radio. My Chemical Romance is playing) I told you I got them in the deck (laughs) this song pumps me up like I drank 10 red bulls. I listen to everything of course my artist Devious we both have an album dropping name The Rookie and the Vet. On October 9th….

Badnews: man that was a perfect segweigh because that was my next question. How did you meet rapper Devious?

8Ball: Well he has an uncle out in Houston and every time I go out there, his uncle tells me “When you get back to Memphis, check out my nephew. He’s good he reminds me of you”. So a while later I bumped into Devious, and he had his CD on him and gave it to me. It had like 10 songs on it, and when I heard it all that really caught my attention was his delivery. The music was ok, but I thought to myself, OK, we can put him in the studio and work with him. I can t really pick out mainstream style artists because of my background, but I heard something in him. I think he could be the future. People hear and love him there’s something about him. He’s a real stand up guy and it shows in his music. The young people will love him he’s definitely the new voice of Tennessee.

Badnews: That’s what’s up. Ok so the album titled “The Rookie and The Vet” is due out October 9th. Thank you very much for your time you’re a real cool dude

8Ball: Thank you, and make sure you go get the album too

Badnews: I promise ill get the album that’s my word (laughs)

8Ball: (laughs) Alright now…

Hope you enjoyed that interview and such with BadNews and Eightball. Yo, on the reals if you're a true fan of Eightball and MJG go get that new album "The Rookie and The Vet" which hits stores this Monday, October 9th.

The Queen Princess Interviews Mario!!

Posted at

Man, it's a pleasure to be back up in this piece. The weather is good and big Destro's extra relicent up in this bitch. You know we're really trying to diversify our portfolio at HHR and a lot of times we do give you Hip Hop on another tangent, but today I thought I'd flip the script so to speak and put you on to some different game. If you haven't noticed yet, Queen P's been sort of on a brief hiatus. Well, there's a reason for that. She's a sophomore at Howard University and she's hella busy doing her thizzle on the school tip. Word? Word life. Anyways, she had the gracious opportunity to devote some of her precious time to converse with R&B singer, Mario! Mario? Word, Mario! When she told me about this I was like cool, let's get it on HipHopRuckus and let the fans check it out. Well, You're probably scratching your head right now and asking yourself this, "Why would I post an article by an R&B singer on HHR?". It's simple, based on statistics over 45% of my readers are female. Plus, I'm spontaneous and I like to throw a few curveballs at you every once in a while. So, without further adu (ghetto for delay), check out this awesome sit down with Queep P and Mario that went down on 9/20 - DestroTheBiggaFigga!!

Queen Princess: Hey how are you doing?

Mario: I’m good how are you?

Queen Princess: Good. So what have you been up to?

Mario: I’ve been up to a lot from shows to photo shoots to interviews everyday to recording with other artists and working on new projects to working with my foundation the Do Right Foundation. Which one do you want to start with?

Queen Princess: I haven’t heard much about your foundation do you want to elaborate on that?

Mario: Sure, the mission of this foundation deals with underprivileged youth, but the difference with these youth is their parents suffered with substance abuse just as mine did. We’re trying to be a role model for these kids who don’t really have a mother of father figure in their life. That’s something that I’ve definitely been involved with this summer. It just started this year, we also provide home tutoring for them with a program called Catapult Online. We did a deal with Dell and Dell provides the computers so they can do their work online. They have their own teacher they can talk to and everything so that’s been pretty cool. As far as the shows I perform about three times a week. I have some things coming up with Kelly Rowland very soon, we’re going on tour together.

Queen Princess: I know you have a date coming up in Nigeria as well. Will that be your first time there?

Mario: It’ll be my first time in Nigeria. I’m looking forward to seeing how Nigeria differs from other parts of Africa that I’ve been to.

Queen Princess: Okay, what are your expectations for Africa if any?

Mario: To be honest with you I really don’t have any expectations, because the first time I went to Africa I did have expectations in mind. I was expecting it to be a lot of dirt roads, trees and animals. I was also expecting it to be very unbearably hot and I was expecting to be riding around in like a safari truck.

(both laugh)

Mario: But it’s a lot different than what I expected it to be. There are a lot of cities there, you can go shopping at the flea markets. There’s not only black people there, there’s also white people, Spanish people and a bunch of tourists there. There are parts of Africa that are very poor and there are parts of Africa that aren’t as poor, but still there aren’t many good jobs or that type of thing. It definitely humbled me to be there and experience that.

Queen Princess: You’ve been pretty busy behind the scenes and everything, have you gotten a chance to go home in between working on films and your new project?

Mario: Yeah, absolutely I’ve been home a lot actually. My mom has a place in Baltimore and we’ve been shooting a documentary together about her life and my life. It’s about dealing with her and her drug issue goes. Growing up my mom was actually a drug addict and we’re just getting our lives together pretty much. She helped me with my music and she wanted to be involved and be an inspiration when I was a lot younger. She helped me to get started so I want to help her get her life together.

Queen Princess: That’s crazy, I was going to ask you if you saw anymore acting in your future, but of course a documentary is real, there’s no acting.

Mario: It’s not acting at all. It’s a totally different part of me and I think people are definitely see me in a different light whether or not it’s negative you can take it how you want to, but it’s a very inspirational thing at the same time.

Queen Princess: Definitely, so you just turned twenty one right?

Yeah I turned twenty-one in August who told you?

(both laugh)

Queen Princess: For a lot of artists who’ve been performing since they were younger turning twenty signifies a substantial growth in their music. What does turning twenty-one mean for you in terms of your music?

Mario: Well the experiences that you have between fifteen and twenty-one are tremendous especially in the music industry, even though you don’t have time to settle down and start a relationship. I mean, I tried the relationship thing and it didn’t work out so I was able to write about a lot of that on this project. I was in a relationship for a minute and it just didn’t work out. I’ve not really been focusing on a relationship, but my music. It’s been hard for me to deal with that. There is that growth period where significant experiences happen that can be used in writing stories or songs for you music. It’s very important.

Queen Princess: It’s been three years since Turning Point was released so would you say that you have a completely new sound for Go?

Mario: I think that the sound for Go is progressive. It’s a lot more aggressive. I’m more passionate and when you hear the music you definitely hear the difference in my voice. There’s a lot more vocal control, lyrically and conceptually I think the record is a lot stronger. There’s definitely a lot of growth.

Queen Princess: Is there more of an in depth explanation behind your album title Go?

Mario: Go…….I actually have a song called “Go” on the album too which is one of my favorite records on the album. The title Go really represents moving forward. To me it represents moving forward in my life as a musician, but “Go” was also supposed to be the first single off of the album, but it was leaked months ahead of time and it kind of messed up the flow and I decided to let it be the title instead.

Queen Princess: Okay and the new single is “Crying out for me,” are we going to be seeing a video for that soon?

Mario: I just actually came from 106 and Park and brought the video, so the video’s out. Have you heard the record?

Queen Princess: Uh huh, definitely.

Mario: Do you like?

Queen Princess: Yes I definitely do!

Mario: Great well I’m glad you like it. That record is a very special record to me and I think this album shows so many different personalities and characteristics of who I am. That’s one of the special ones right there. Both vocally and characteristically wise.

Queen Princess: Alright, did you go in a different direction with the writing and producing on this album. Were you able to do a lot of the writing yourself?

Mario: I wrote four songs on this album and the other songs that I did, I co-wrote on. There are a lot of records that are self-made and that come directly from me, but most of the records……90% of all the records I take from my real experiences. Especially ones like “Do right”, “Kryptonite”, “Music for love”, “Crying out for me.” I also have a record on the album called “Skippin” which is more or less like a story.

Queen Princess: I know that you’re a part of a writing team called The Knightwritahz. Can you tell us about that?

Mario: We’re a writing and production team actually. It’s Marsha Ambrosuis from Floetry and Oak who’s a producer still establishing an artist at Def Jam and we’re really just a group. Actually the Knightwritahz were already around when I met them, they were already established as a little crew. I really enjoyed the energy and I thought that they crew was very talented and I decided to help out with a lot of the records that they were involved with. Our chemistry is great so yep, I’m part of the Kightwritahz, we have three records on my project and other records with people like Usher, Chris Brown and Raven Symone, J-Lo and One Chance so things are good with that. You’ll see more records by the Knightwritahz it’s one of them things that you have to build up and we have incredible chemistry. “Krytonite” is a record by the Knightwritahz by the way. It’s pretty much one of my favorite songs on the album.

Queen Princess: You guys have worked with a variety of artists, but who are you listening to right now?

Mario: Everything, John Mayor, Marvin Gaye, Jay-Z, I’ve been listening to Kanye since “Through the wire.” I also listen to Sade, I listen to Incubus, Bob Marley, Maroon 5, Panic at the Disco

Queen Princess: A lot of different stuff. So how do you manage to stay true to yourself because a lot of the time when artists come back out they try to come out sounding like what’s popular, but for you it’s Mario every time. How do you stay focused and do you every single time?

Mario: Are you saying that you hear that in my music?

Queen Princess: Yes, definitely.

Mario: I really think that’s just………Well you know I came up listening to all types of music. Today I don’t feel like music affects me like the music back in the day used to affect me. Because this old music still affects me I can appreciate it so much more, so I know what it means to be original. It’s important to be original, it’s important to create your own style. After I came out with “Let me love you,” every song that came out on the radio after that was a Let me love you wannabe. That type of thing right there shows me how shallow radio listeners….[can be]. The radio plays records and you may not even like the record and because it’s played a million times you just start singing it. It’s almost inevitable and sometimes we don’t have control over the records that get played, but I’m here to of course be original, ‘cause that’s what I do. I’m here to be an influence to other singers. So thank you, I take that as a complement by the way.

Queen Princess: Oh you’re welcome. It definitely distinguishes you even further from other artists out there. We know who you are.

Mario: I’m not just saying this, but when my album comes out October 30th, you’ll definitely hear the difference between me and other artists. I promise you.

Queen Princess: Do you have any different expectations for this album. Do you want it to do different things or reach a different audience than your previous two albums?

Mario: I really want this album to hit everybody in a different way. Each song conceptually is different and will touch people in a different way, but I just really want people to appreciate it musically. It’ll definitely hit a more mature audience, because it sound a lot more mature, but I want to hit the younger fans who don’t really care too much about singing or who aren’t too serious about albums, I want them to appreciate it too. Some people just listen to music because it’ hot on the radio, but some people really love the sound of music.

Queen Princess: Alright do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Mario: Just keep supporting music, we need y’all. Act out of choice rather than out of habit and enjoy your life. Come holla at cha boy October 30th, in stores.

Queen Princess: Well thank you for taking out the time to do this interview.

Mario: Yeah, you already got it, you already know, thank you.

Did you enjoy that interview, Well I sure did. Yo, we'd like to give mad respect to Mario for hooking up this interview with us at HHR and lastly go pick up his album Turning Point which is in stores on October 30th!!

Got questions or comments for the Queen Princess, email her at this link.

Exclusive Audio
Good morning all, I been on my grizzy for a minute but I'm back up in this botch. Anyways, my homie JDP sent me this new joint by him on the independent tip called "I'm Fresh". J's been on the set before and we really like the flow he displays. Lastly, Note to all independent MC's who get at HHR for free promo: If you're serious about getting your shine, please leave a voicemail w/callback # when I send you my contact number. If you don't call back then you're probably not serious, so if you're material is not HHR, that's probably why. Remember, HHR is strictly grassroots and free...free.... meaning if you can't spend 45 seconds to make a call or leave a note I won't know who you are. Staight up! In closing, just wanted to let you all know that we got a great lineup today. We got an awesome interview with Eightball and BadNews and a nice conversation with Queen Princess and Mario. So stay tuned for that, it'll have those joints up about 12 pm EST today...until then ciao....DestroTheBigga Figga!

"The Trilogy: AZ Heat - Part 1" Album Review by Flo Dirt

Posted at

As you know, I bring it to you raw and uncut and my normal mode of ops is to break down each and every track on the product I receive, good and bad. I’m going against the grain this time out and breaking my no-mixtape rule for this one. If you didn’t know, I’ve been building a foundation in the Arizona desert for about 4 years now and have been introduced to some amazing artistic talent. It’s time that the world stops to pay attention. I’m bringing you a three-part review series starring three different artists all reppin’ Arizona ultra-hard! I got a sneak peek at an upcoming release from the world-famous, yet still underrated, Man Up Squad collective. I interviewed the homie Cinque earlier this year. (Check my resume’, family!) For those of you tardy to the game, the Man Up Squad includes talent from all over the globe and when I say talent, I mean it. The family includes Willy Northpole who’s on Disturbin’ Tha Peace, Young Hot Rod on G-Unit and Jiggalo on Suave House. They also have a gang of hard spitters including Cinque, Che Che, Lo, Big Fraze, Petah Roy and like a thousand more killers. To quote Cinque from the “Cin City” track: “More niggas in my click than the Wu Tang.” That’s an understatement, but similar to the Wu, Man Up has a variety of voices and lyrical fortitude.

Since I’m breaking my mixtape rule, I’m also breaking my regular format. FLO can do that though. There are about 25 tracks on this disc and I want the people unfamiliar with the crew to get the very best of the best. So, I’m tearing through this joint, scrutinizing the contents and giving you the Top 10 tracks on the “Phoenix Sons” mixtape, hosted by DJ Warrior from Cali Untouchable Radio. In other words, I’m the mulatto David Letterman in this bitch. You all know Hot Rod from 50’s G-Unit gang. He has his own mixtape floating around the ‘net called “The Hit Man.” Look for it and you be the judge. Doing some research, dude definitely has a lot of detractors but after seeing him at the Phoenix Son’s concert recently, your boy also has a strong feminine following. Which would you prefer? Say what you want but on this one, Mick Swagger spits the hardest verses I’ve heard from him. Cinque aka Cin Citayyyy, makes the clique sound universal. You can drop him in NY, the ATL, the city of Chi or Oaktown and dude could fit right in like he was from there. But he’s reppin’ Phoenix to the heart. The two of them got together and created this much-anticipated cd. I’m not a big fan of mixtapes in general because I think it’s a dying trend. It’s time for the concept album to come back. But honestly, I was waiting on this one like a rainy day in Arizona… Let’s get it!

(In no particular order…)

1. “Too Strong”: Industry Rule #4081 (according to DIRT) states that thou shalt put one of your hardest tracks first to capture the audience’s attention. Job well-done here, fellas. The beat is bangin’, gruff-voiced Viper kicks that rugged, ragga steez on it and both Cin and Rod come in the door blastin’.

2. “Arizona”: This one was on Cin’s Myspace for a minute and I was glad to see it over here. It’s got a West Coast – Just Blaze kind of feel to it. Make you wanna screw your face up and twist your neck a little. He said some shit like, “Negative influence. Street shit? I’ve been through it. New rappers, you wack. You ‘bout as hard as Glenn Lewis. Marshmallow, soft body, internet gang-bangers. Your life ain’t worth half the ice on my ring finger.”

3. “Pocket Change”: They brought the homie Willy Northpole along on this one. The beat scrapes through the hood slow and the song reminded me of a harder version of “Window Shopper.” Willy really killed it on this one at the end of his verse. “Buck, put the knife up… Southside scene to South-Side Queens. Any hood, I’m good making south side cream. I played Pop Warner on the south side team and then I popped up on ‘em as a south side king.”

4. “U Ain’t Hard”: Jiggalo shows his range on this track, proving he can produce universal music and not just one style of beats like a lot of beat-makers vs. producers out there. Cinque holds this one down for dolo and calls out the mass of cream puff, studio villains out there.

5. “Real Nigga”: Cin, through wordplay, shouts out his Man Up members one by one as he pops a couple shots at another local legend… I can’t name names here for two reasons:

1) I don’t promote beef and I got a lot of love for everyone out here, including the target. Enough money for everyone to get in.

2) If you know the history, you can read between the lines and figure it out for yourself. Pick up the mixtape for yourself. Don’t ask me about it… Beat-wise, it’s rugged and Cin pulls no punches again.

6. “Gangsta Hustle”: Dre didn’t produce this one?? Wow, Jiggalo did it again. “My kids born with silver spoons just like a white child.” HA! Man, that line kills me every time. Where is Ricky Stratton when we need him? Probably riding his train through the mansion with Alfonso Ribeiro!

7. “1 to the 2”: My favorite song on here! This one ripped the Beat Battle down here in AZ this year. It had Buck and Yayo saying that they would buy the beat from him whether he won or not. Jig and Cin go back to back over the keys and the bass line. This is the one track I was mad at for not being the full-length joint!

8. “My Bitch”: Oh, you didn’t know that the board legend, No I.D. was down with Man Up?? Do some homework, fam. No I.D. produced this heater. The hook isn’t much to talk about but the beat speaks for itself. This one could have been an instrumental and I would have loved it just as much. It’s a hood tale of sex and loyalty… We don’t save ‘em!

9. “Get Back”: I wasn’t really up on Hot Rod and therefore not really a fan because I hadn’t heard anything of real substance until recently. This is one of my favorite tracks because I can’t get enough of hip hop biography! He pinpoints his history from Sacramento to AZ, his felonious acts and his introduction to music and signing with the Unit. Worth a thorough listen. What up, Hot Rod??

10. “Man Up”: Who has XM satellite radio? If you do, you’ve probably heard this joint. Produced by Trey Holla, Cinque really spits that global venom here. “Why you wanna see a man down? Nigga, we stand with God. We never stand down. It’s the Man Up Squad. Never back down. My niggas are really hard… What kind of nigga wanna see a man down?” I ask myself the same question daily… This is one of the three that I keep on repeat on my iPhone.

Other joints to check for:

“Pirotechnics” starring Hot
