DJ Premiere introduces "The NYG'z"

Posted at

Fans of Gang Starr have been waiting anxiously for DJ Premier’s Year Round Label to open up shop and that day has finally arrived! Hot off of the heels of their DJ Premier produced “Anti-Imus” protest track, “N.H.B.” f/Blaq Poet, Gang Starr Foundation members, The NYG’z (Panchi and Shabeeno), put NY on their back and “Hip-Pop” under attack with the release of their debut street-LP---“Welcome To G-Dom.”

With the release of “Welcome To G-Dom,” which will be released on 9-12-07, it will mark the first release from DJ Premier’s Year Round Records imprint and the first of a veritable slew of projects the label has kept under wraps until now. DJ Premier assertively states “NYG’z is bringin' the definition of a duo back to the front line of Hip-Hop. Not only is it street, but they represent the true meaning of what it is to make a real album. Be on the lookout for NYG’z street album, Welcome To G-Dom, and my first all DJ Premier produced LP with the NYG’z, Pros & Cons, you heard the first Jeru The Damaga LP and the Group Home LP; need I say more?”

Bolstered by the rugged street-intellect of Panchi and Shabeeno (who as a duo have previously appeared on “The Mall” from Gang Starr’s classic opus Moment Of Truth) and the impeccable production of DJ Premier (who produces seven tracks) Welcome To G-Dom formally declares the NYG’z as not only a problem, but one of NYC’s top up-and-coming groups. “Welcome To G-Dom is a teaser, what we consider a brief but thorough introduction of what’s to come” quips Shabeeno.

Boasting guest appearances from M.O.P.’s Lil Fame, Royal Flush and Year Round Records family members Blaq Poet and Rave and production as well from DJ Premier, Thorotracks and Emile who has also worked with a who’s who of Hip-Hop’s elite (AZ, Obie Trice, Snoop, The Roots, Ghostface, Ice Cube, Rhymefest, M.O.P, Raekwon, Cormega) Welcome To G-Dom promises to be both a lyrical and sonic tour de force. But perhaps Panchi sums it up best “finally, our soundtrack for the movie you call life!”

On September 12th, 2007, Hip-Pop is under attack with the NYG’z Welcome To G-Dom!

"Rasheeda shares her Bumble Gum with Queen Princess" Exclusive Interview!

Posted at

Hey we're back again with another interview for ya on the sly tip with homegirl, Rasheeda and our very own Queen Princess. For the naagaas out here reading this jank, Rasheeda is not only a fine mamacita but also a talented MC hailing from Atlanta, Georgia whose down with the DTP click and Ludacris. She first got on the scene with her alubm entitled Dirth South in 2001. On the EP, there was that classic banger called "Do It" (click here to reminiscience) with Pastor Troy, remember that? Anyways, homegirl just dropped a new joint mane called Dis Dat Type of Gurl which is in stores. Hey, she's got game cuzin. So if u see her in the club ,you better come correct. Cool? Awright then, check out more about shawty in this exclusive interview with her and Queen Princess. Get yo game right fellas...

Queen Princess: Hey Rasheeda, how are you doing, you ready for the interview?

Rasheeda: Yeah, I’m ready.

Queen Princess: What’s been good with you today staying busy?

Rasheeda: Yes ma’am, I’m getting ready to go on the road tomorrow so I’m rehearsing. The usual stuff, running around and trying to get stuff together.

Queen Princess: Well, that’s what you gotta do. It’s weird ‘cause I’m always interviewing male artists and I haven’t really had a chance to interview any female artists who are holdin it down. It’s a nice little change. Anyway, you started in a group so how did you make the transition to a solo artist or when did you realize it wasn’t working?

Rasheeda: It wasn’t really that, it just got to a point where we started doing different things and I wanted to continue to do music, I mean it was like a quick transition for me because I went into the studio right after we decided to go our separate ways and started recording a solo project and came out with a record in the next six months from when we did that.

Queen Princess: Okay, so it wasn’t hard at all making the transition?

Rasheeda: No, not at all (laughs)

Queen Princess: I mean that’s important when you have to keep it moving. So how would you say you’ve changed since you came out with your first album Dirty South? How are you different?

Rasheeda: Every year I’m learning more about the business and my artistry and you know becoming my own. At this point in my career, I’m extremely confident and comfortable with my music and the things that I talk about and you know just period. The experience over the years, I went through different ups and downs in the industry period and that’s what made me a stronger artist and a stronger business woman and I really couldn’t ask for much more. Back then I was a lot younger and a lot more inexperienced especially in the business end of it. I was Rasheeda trying to come into myself, but now I’m full fledged 100% knowing who I am, where I’m going and what I want to do.

Queen Princess: That’s what’s up, okay so would you say it was difficult to stay in the game? Does it get harder every year?

Rasheeda: Oh yeah it definitely gets harder, it gets harder every year. You know the most important thing with me is staying consistent and putting out records whether they reach nationwide or not, but just staying hot in the streets. Being on remixes and doing different records and keeping records out there and keeping your face out there. As soon as you take a break and think you can relax is as quick as you’re forgotten.

Queen Princess: Right.

Rasheeda: You know I still have so much ground to cover and so many things that need to be accomplished in my career, I can’t afford to slack off. I just keep on going and it’s extremely hard, it’s male dominated so I just have to stay really really focused and keep grindin all the time.

Queen Princess: Yep it really is male dominated. You know people are saying that hip-hop is dead and it’s in a bind or whatever. You do more of the crunk music, so would you say there’s anything about crunk music that’s changed that you don’t like?

Rasheeda: Well, I’m not specifically a crunk artist and I don’t think there’s anything that’s changed. It’s starting to be a lot more of a business than people looking at it as far as the music aspect is concerned, you know what I’m saying? I don’t think there’s anything as far as crunk. Crunk is just a word that we use for highly energetic music that moves in the club. Down here in the south we do a lot of music that’s for the club and that’s where crunk kind of came from. I think people kind of consider it to have trickled down a little bit and it’s starting to become regular so it’s not specifically crunk you know what I’m saying?

Queen Princess: Yes, and you’re the type of artists who says what she wants to say in your songs and you don’t hold back in your lyrics. Do you feel it’s important to get out what you want to say as opposed to always being safe?

Rasheeda: Yeah, I definitely do. I think that’s being true to myself and I also think that people understand and know that she’s talking and being real about it and not trying to sugar coat nothing because then it’s not staying true to what you’re trying to put out there. With me, I feel as though I’m a strong independent black woman out here trying to make it and grind and gain my respect and working. And I feel as though I need to say the things that are on my mind, because a lot of the time those are the same issues and thoughts that other women are going through. You know if I try to sugar coat it they’re going to be like naw I don’t know I’m not really feelin that (both laugh). They feel me on the real things that I talk about.

Queen Princess: How do you want people to receive your music?

Rasheeda: My music pertains to a lot of women and those are the things that I’m finding out as I’m doing interviews and going to different cities and stuff and I’m just glad that women are accepting it and the men are really really liking it. It’s the type of music that has hard hitting tracks and on a lyrical standpoint it’s just real stuff that everyone can relate to and the fellas are like man.

Queen Princess: What would you say has been the greatest accomplishment of your career?

Rasheeda: The greatest accomplishment is gaining more fans and people embracing my music and people saying my lyrics. Just being blessed to keep on going and having the strength to keep on going and being able to constantly put out albums.

Queen Princess: Okay, do you ever see yourself on tour with other female rappers?

Rasheeda: Oh yeah! That would be something that I would love to do. I mean it hasn’t been put together yet, but you know.

Queen Princess: I mean it’s never really been done before with female rappers; that would be something new to bring to the game. So what can listeners expect from your new album?

Rasheeda: Um….you know just realness. Real woman talk.

(both laugh)

Rasheeda: Great beats and hot lyrics. I’m putting out them issues, I’m putting them right out there on the table.

Queen Princess: Okay, who were you able to work with on this album?

Rasheeda: On the album there’s Akon, Jazze Phae and Baby. Pastor Troy, Diamond and Princess from Crime Mob, who else……? There’s another guy on the record his name is Dream. Production wise Don Vito, Jazze Phae produced, Akon produced, Jasper produced and an in house producer named Shiwen he produced a lot of the tracks on there as well.

Queen Princess: Alright, you got a lot of collaboration going on with this album.

Rasheeda: Yes

Queen Princess: The album is called Dat Type of Gurl, so what is your definition of dat type of gurl?

Rasheeda: That’s exactly what they get, the type of girl that I am. When you listen to the album you’ll understand where I come from and how I get down. With the different things that I talk about you kind of come into my world. It’s especially saying I’m dat type of gurl who’s that around the way classy chic who ain’t afraid to speak what’s on her mind and put it out there but at the same time rumble with the big boys.

Queen Princess: Is there anyone that you didn’t get a chance to work with on the album?

Rasheeda: Not anybody that I would say I couldn’t get or anything. That wasn’t the basis of anything. I just kind of hit a couple people up like hey I’m at the studio and everybody I called basically came straight through. There wasn’t anybody that I missed or anything.

Queen Princess: Atlanta’s the place to be too, that’s were everybody’s at these days.

Rasheeda: Yeah, there are a lot of people moving here and a lot of artists live here.

Queen Princess: So how is Dat Type of Gurl different from Georgia Peach?

Rasheeda: Actually there’s some songs from Georgia Peach on Dat Type of Gurl. The albums came out kind of close together and at the same time, but the difference is in the tracks, there’s some really hot joints. You’ll feel the records like you did the previous ones but on the new ones you feel the swag and the confidence. You know, it’s an enhancement of Georgia Peach, it’s the next step.

Queen Princess: What do you want to happen after the album drops?

Rasheeda: I just want to grind it out and keep working and continue to do shows. Of course you’re always thinking about the next project and I’m going to be working on another project too myself and Kandi, she’s a former member of Xscape.

Queen Princess: Of course.

Rasheeda: Me and her are a duo of hip-hop and R&B and we have an album that we’re finalizing that’s dropping soon so I’m out here working on that project. I’m just staying busy and the name of the group is Peach Candy.

Queen Princess: Okay, That’s something new as well that has never been done by females before either.

Rasheeda: No it hasn’t, we’re real excited about it, we got some real hot records, it’s off the chain.

Queen Princess: Okay..…well do you have anything else that you would like to share with hip-hop ruckus?

Rasheeda: Basically, check me out on my myspace. Pick up the album June 19th Dat Type of Gurl and check out the videos on my page as well. There’s a video for “My Bubblegum,” and be looking out for that Peach Candy album as well.

Queen Princess: Alright well thank you so much for doing this interview.

Rasheeda: Oh girl, no thanks for having me I appreciate it.

Word up, we'd like to thank Rasheeda and all that for doing this interview with on the sly. Much luv and show some love to sista girl by hitting her up on her official page.

"Meet Mr. J. Medeiros" Exclusive Interview by BadNews

Posted at

Word up y'all. I just want to introduce you to a unique and talented MC named Mr. J.Medeiros. He's a cool cat representin' the Colorado state that's on the positive tip yo. His climb up the mountain has been a long one as he's had to sacrifice alot (as you'll read later) but these struggles have led to bigger things for him such as his own record label, the ability to creatively develop artists for Rawkus Records and the grand prize...his own album, "Of Gods and Girls" which is set to be releases in July 07. Pretty cool stuff huh? Well, find out more about this cat in this interview that was conducted between him and BadNews last week. Good stuff....

Badnews: Ok, so you started out in the music business in 1997 right?

J Mederios: Yes around that time

Badnews: so how did you stay afloat for so long? Independently at that?!

J Mederios: It wasn’t easy man. I was really broke, I slept on friends couches, I slept on floors, and I claimed bankruptcy I was in bad shape. But I started touring with the Procussions in 97. We originally were just a performance group, you know at shows we would just perform. Later on I started a label, but it wasn’t getting the recognition, so I moved to Los Angeles because there wasn’t much support for chances to make it in Colorado. So I recorded my very 1st album, started touring places like Japan—just touring everywhere. I mean all over the world. I try to go back to Colorado as often as I can.

Badnews: Yeah I realized that you’re from Colorado

J Mederios: Yes, I’m from Colorado Springs

Badnews: Ok that’s whats up. Ill get back to that in a minute. But my next question is, you’re really passionate about speaking out and trying to stop human trafficking. What drew you to this problem, and what are you doing to help stop this problem other than using music?

J Mederios: Let me start off about explaining the song “Constance”. Women are raped, sold to men from their families, forced to have sex, forced to perform sex acts in from to the camera, then average Joes like you or me log on to these sites and watch this for our entertainment, not knowing what little girls like “Constance” go through. But with my album, I’m trying to redefine man. There’s this image of man. Man has the power. Men are demanding, man is misogynistic, people Fear him. Man has this image that violence makes him macho, man rather be feared than respected. Man created this image in hip hop of woman like she is our material; she’s not equal to man. We call women you know bitch and ho and then we tell them to umm… suck our genitalia. This is how we entertain ourselves; this is the music we blast in our cars on our way to the club. We tell woman we are her protector, yet we demean her, we hurt her. Man ignores our conscious. There’s a website named iamconfidence.com where women can leave there story anonymously. But the song “Constance” is about a girl who gets sold by her father, and goes through some pretty bad stuff. Hip hop is a supporter of this by our music and the content we release to the masses. The image (the media) puts in front of our young men is wrong. There selling us an image and a fantasy that is dangerous. If you read into the lyrics you will see that it is pointless, and by the time you figure it out you will have been either hurt or killed. By the way I’m trying to redefine the image of man I’m basically saying, it’s ok to love, its ok to respect woman she is our equal, she is second to none. We can love her and respect her.

Badnews: Wow that was deep for real; this sounds like a problem that really needs to be addressed more on a bigger platform.

J Mederios: Yes. What is going on is sick. And like I said this really happens. Women go through things like this just for our entertainment. This is what makes big money. The porn industry generates a lot of money. It makes more than Professional baseball, basketball, hockey all that combined. Combined. So this is a serious problem that needs attention.

Badnews: Wow it kind of makes you think twice about what goes on and how our world really works. Well ok let’s talk about the song tilled “call you” what inspired you to create that? There’s not that many song out there that address both parents in a positive light, especially in hip hop.

J Mederios: It’s a true story about my mother and father. I avoided making this song for a very long time but I wanted to have a song that was real, as well as entertaining to the people who listen to it. My mom had brain surgery; my dad was an ex marine. He didn’t make it past the 6th grade but he’s a very intelligent man, he’s very wise. But I wanted to show them love and thank them for supporting me. But others who listen to this can hopefully inspire them to love their families and love them and take care of each other no matter what you go through.

Badnews: That’s what’s up for real, it’s like you bringing family back (laughs)

J Mederios: Yeah definitely (laughs)

Badnews: So you have 16 tracks on your album titled “Of Gods and Girls”. Was there pressure to create more songs, or were there times you were second guessing yourself about what you wanted on the album or not?

J Mederios: Well it took me a month to write this whole album. The Procussions were touring 200 days a year. I was living on my best friends couch, I lost my car, and I got evicted. I couldn’t even take my furniture with me; I had to throw it out. I just kept what I really liked. I was feeling real insecure about myself. So I poured my soul into this project. I wrote it, produced it I did everything on this track. There are remixes on it though like the song “stroll” I did the original version, but in my personal opinion the remix sounds better. Some people like my version, but I really like the remix better (laughs). But you always second guess yourself. But either way the material was good and at the end I got a great record, and then I got my point across so I’m happy with it

Badnews: That’s good. I ask everyone that question, but you’re the first person to actually say you like someone else’s remix better than yours that’s a hiphopruckus first (laughs)

J Mederios: (laughs) Well I’m glad to make history

Badnews: (laughs) We don’t have an official record book but ill make sure I get that noted. Ok you mentioned earlier that you’re from Colorado. And you even started your career there. Well I’m living in Colorado right now. So I’m involved in the Colorado hip hop music scene a lot. Do you think Colorado one day has the potential to blow up on a mainstream level like St. Louis, Atlanta etc.?

J Mederios: Aw man no question. The next generation is coming up. 97 that was the time it was generally new and we were the foundation. We didn’t have attention or a media monster like the internet to pass our songs out to the world. Back then we had to prove ourselves. We really don’t have a big name either repping for us, like Prince did for Minnesota. But I hope groups like the Procussions will be an example. CO music needs a little more time and inspiration. It takes belief to be believable.

Badnews: How did you get recognition in Colorado in the first place?

J Mederios: Well I started off on St. Francis radio that is a big deal In Colorado. You know what I’m talking about.

Badnews: True. Well you were doing your thing back then. Ok well your speak out on a lot of social issues, did you realize early on that music could be your tool to end or at least expose the problems your so passionate about?

J Mederios: No doubt in my mind. Music is a powerful force good or bad. People say music speaks to them. Its real influential, so early on I knew that if I can address these problems through songs someone can be inspired to help stop or expose like you said these problems so they can get the attention it deserves.

Badnews: I’m telling you, music is a lethal weapon people… use it accordingly. Ok, well your skies are clearer and you were signed to the historic Rawkus records. What was your reaction to signing on that dotted line?

J Mederios: I felt great. I already had my own label, but it’s not enough. I was defiantly excited, but I wasn’t really too involved. But one day I was on the computer, and I went to the Rawkus website, and I seen my picture next to Mos Def, Talib, P and I was blown away. I had no money I was broke and homeless, now I'm an artist on this label, and my picture is mixed in with all these great lyricists. But right now I have to settle down and focus on my music.

Badnews: I know I would have that same feeling to. Ok, finally I know your doing you thing but have you been to any movies this summer?

J Mederios: Not really, but whenever I get a chance ill try to watch any US films. But man ill tell you the craziest thing is watching American movies overseas. have you ever seen Spider-Man 3?

Badnews: ...yeah

J Mederios: Remember the part where spider-man is swinging through the city and he lands on that building with the American flag waving in the background?

Badnews: (laughs) Yeah…

J Mederios: Well, when that part came on in a French movie theatre… the whole audience broke out with laughter man! Anything that had anything to do with Americans talking about freedom, or the flag you would hear snickers and giggles from the audience. Man I’m telling you Bush took the word freedom and destroyed it. Everyone laughed so hard. It was crazy. But I’m telling you Ghost Rider is stupid. Nick and Eva are talented actors, this movie made them look crazy (laughs). Its like how can you mess with Johnny Blaze? Even with superman, the should had had the guy from “Smallville” play superman in the movie. Man they are crazy in Hollywood! (laughs)

Badnews: (laughs) Man you keep it so real, I was going to watch that movie but now I’m cool. And I see you getting your Ebert & Roper on over there (laughs) well thanks for your time, and good luck with you career.

J Mederios: Thanks and you be cool man.

Big shout outs to J.Medeiros and the Procussions for this one cuzin! Show some lov cuzin and hit their official pageup when you get a chance!
