"10 Shots with The Boss Hogg Outlawz" Exclusive Interview by Flo Dirt

Posted at

Flo Dirt is at again, last week he had the chance to sit down with Slim Thug's newest protege's the Boss Hogg Outlawz. They are a 7 member group composed of J Dawg, PJ the Rap Hustla, Chris Ward, Sir Daily, Rob Smallz, Killa Kyleon, Young Black. This is a different interview feel for Flo because the interview was done with 2 of the members Chris Ward and Young Black. Great interview and remember that they their first album,"Serve and Collect" was just released on 2/27/07.

Peep the newest edition of "10 Shots with Flo Dirt"...

Flo-Dirt: 1. With 7 in the group (J Dawg, PJ the Rap Hustla, Chris Ward, Sir Daily, Rob Smallz, Killa Kyleon, Young Black & Slim Thug), how does everyone shine and was there another group that you patterned yourselves after, like Wu-Tang?

Young Black: Naw, actually the group thing isn’t really a group thing. Everybody is individually a solo artist. It’s a compilation thang. Boss Hogg is our scene. It’s time to show the people that we still here. People were always telling us that they wanted to see more of an H-Town thing.

Chris Ward: Four of us were already the Boyz N Blue: me, Killa, PJ and Slim. We joined that team as solo artists. We just collaboratin’ the whole album. You might catch me on some songs with Killa, three with Slim, two with P, one with Black. Everybody just collabs. We went in and just knocked it out. As far as everyone getting their shine, my mentality is either go hard or go home. The competition is very high. Nobody is really trying to outshine nobody. Any slackin, you gon get left behind.

Flo Dirt: 2. Why did you choose Koch Records for “Serve & Collect” and what’s that money like for real over there?

Young Black: Hey man! You know it’s that independent money man! We ran with Koch so we could see more bread in the long run. It’s pretty good man. I’m happy with what they’re cuttin’ over there.

Chris Ward: We trying to see what that money looks like right now. We’re trying to figure it out. Boyz N Blue are going through Interscope. The Koch record was a gateway for us to feed the streets with the independent thing like we all been doing the do. It was kind of a way for us to give the streets something and not be so much worried about the sales. Everybody be waitin for us to drop something. We needed to feed em something. Slim finna drop “The Boss of All Bosses” and Boyz N Blue won’t be out til later this year. Koch was gonna back it and stand strong with us. Interscope wasn’t knockin that and Koch wasn’t knockin’ what Interscope had goin on. It gave us a gateway to both worlds and let us promote ourselves as artists and do whatever else we got up and coming.

Flo Dirt: 3. Obama or Clinton on ’08?

Young Black: As much as I love to see Obama in there man, I don’t really trust Obama. He look like any other politician even though his skin is similar to ours. I probably might end up pullin for Hillary in there. We gonna sit back and see what happens. Catch CNN and see what’s really going on; where their heads at.

Chris Ward: I don’t know to be honest. Whoever is gonna stand up and fix all the trouble that Bush caused. Get in there and mend that and put some healing to the trouble. They gotta get us out of debt. Whoever good with money and can stop all the trouble-startin’. That’s what I feel.

Flo Dirt: 4. In reading some of the online reviews of “Serve & Collect” opinions vary. Some people think you’re better than Slim and others think that he carries the group. Since that always happens, how do you keep a consistent chemistry and not let it affect the group?

Young Black: Critics is critics. I personally try not to get into it. In XXL they gave me a good review and then on the internet somewhere, they were trashing me. It can go either way. It’s really just one person’s general opinion on what’s going on in the group. Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion. We all know what they say about opinions. I try not to even pay attention to it. We like family. We had ups and downs. All that talk is just talk. Everybody gets their shine on individually so we ain’t concerned about who’s who and what’s what.

Chris Ward: We been working together for awhile. Me and Slim been working together for about 5 or 6 years doing underground stuff. We are zoned out to where we don’t even pay attention to what’s going on outside of our windows. A lot of people will say he carries the group because he has the name. He is the face for us in reality. In a way, he does carry the team. As far as us rapping and doing our own thing, we don’t need no babysitter. We do all our own rapping, our own hooks. We know how to pick a beat. A lot of the songs we do when Slim is on em, we don’t necessarily do them WITH Slim. He usually comes back and he comes and jumps on em. Sometimes he has his own songs and we jump on them. If you send one of us in the studio right now with Jazze Pha or Timbaland, we don’t need him with us. We trying to handle our own and stand on our own feet.

Flo Dirt: 5. With all of the talent coming out of the South right now, why should anyone buy the entire cd vs. downloading their favorite song on iTunes?

Young Black: Honestly, I can’t blame em! The industry has been giving them just watered down bullshit! There’s a couple singles that’s what it is but they album is trash. Nobody wants to spend their hard earned cash on that. I can understand it but at the same time, for real artists, it’s hard as hell to sell records. Anybody in the game know! Anybody can download it, anybody can bootleg it and you got everybody in the club parking lot selling your shit! It’s crazy. True music fans gonna buy the real album. I feel personally that I’ll buy someone’s album the first time around and if I ain’t happy the first time, I’m probably not gonna buy another one. I honestly think that everybody is gonna be happy with this “Serve and Collect” album. The majority of people because not everybody will be happy. I know they’ll get their money’s worth.
Chris Ward: This cd is not loaded with singles. It’s loaded with music. When you listen to it, we wasn’t even looking for a single. We just made an album. Our songs sound like drinking and smoking music but we do it in a whole different way. We lyrical! Some of us just give it to you straight up, but a few of us are really lyrical! We don’t sound like everybody. We are in a league of our own in Houston. If you listen to a little bit, you’ll be hooked. You can download the song if you want. I want to make you go get it.

Flo Dirt: 6. What exactly are you serving and collecting with this cd?

Young Black: I’m serving these hot rhymes, serving this hot flow and I’m trying to collect this goddamn money man! (Laughs) I can’t put it no realer than that man!

Chris Ward: We serving you raw, uncut music straight off the block. No preservatives and all commercial free. And we trying to collect this cash, this fan base and this longevity to outrun anybody.

Flo Dirt: 7. Top 5 rappers to come out of Houston outside of the Boss Hogg Outlawz?

Young Black: Scarface is one for me. I’ve been knowing Chamillionaire since he was on Swishahouse. He been doing his thing. There’s a lot of cats in H-Town that ain’t been put on yet. Slim Thug. I gotta ride with the boss. That’s a good question right there! Devin the Dude! I’m trippin man! If they don’t know about Devin by now?? I think he’s a mastermind, a genius on the cool man! Man, I ain’t never been stumped on a question like that. I’ll have to say Lil Keke!

Chris Ward: Big Pokey, Bun B, Lil Keke, Scarface, and one more… Big Hawk! That’s my fa sho 5. That’s my FAB 5!

Flo Dirt: 8. What impact does Myspace have on your career and how seriously do you take it? Meaning, who do you respond to if anyone?

Young Black: I hated Myspace for a minute. I got my own personal page too. It’s crazy. I got addicted. I love to interact with the people. When they feel like they can get at you. I’m definitely interacting with the people. Then the fact that there’s some fine ass girls on there too. That doesn’t hurt nothin’! A lot of DJ’s too man. I didn’t realize how many dj’s were on there and they hit me up for (a lot of) drops all day. I show em love cuz I know how it is when you’re starting out. Mine is myspace.com/211gangsta

Chris Ward: To be honest, I kinda respond but I use it to network. There’s a bunch of people on there that want a bunch of nothing. I respond to people that’s talking about something, that are progressive. Some people on there to meet chicks but I ain’t with all that. I ain’t looking for no new homeboys. Some people trying to expand their talent but I am not looking for no new talent. They look at me because I have my own label. But for the time being, I just try to politick a little bit and use it as a tool to promote myself. If people got beats, I use it for that. Other than that, I ain’t wit it! There’s a lot of whipped cream type shit out there!

Flo Dirt: 9. What are you listening to when nobody’s watching?

Young Black: I listen to pretty much everything. I feel a lot of that rock like Sublime, Maroon 5 and cats like that. When I’m on the solo tip, I probably listen to that by myself because my homies might not feel lit like that.

Chris Ward: I ain’t gon lie, I’m universal. Young Buck! Screw tapes and my regulars: my Jigga, Killa Cam, Messy Marv and San Quinn, 40-Water.

Flo Dirt: I like that answer! I’m from the Bay and people don’t recognize the talent out there! Not a whole lot of people know about Messy Marv and San Quinn!

Chris Ward: They lame! That’s all! They lame! Tha Relativez too! I still jam that old Eminem!

Flo Dirt: 10. When was the last time someone didn’t “Recognize a Playa”?

Young Black: At my old school, Prairie View A&M University. They got this deal they do called Hump Day on the hill every Wednesday when all the students come out and they listen to music. We were out there signing autographs. They tried to get us to go to the radio station and we were cool with it. The head dude, I guess the Program Director was over it. He was trippin! He wasn’t even havin it. He pulled the cat that brought us there into the office and chewed him out! This cat ain’t recognizin’ a player! We wasn’t trippin’. We were just showing love. I went there back in the day. They bump our music down there.

Chris Ward: (laughs) I pretty much get recognized all the time! I’m fresh in the flesh with it, man!

Flo Dirt: What else do you have for us?

Young Black: Everybody out there that like this Boss Hogg shit or HATE this Boss Hogg shit, as long as you talking about em, I’m still doing my thang. Young Black, man I’m in the mix!

Chris Ward: That’s it. One love. Shout out RIP to my homie Big Hawk!

(Flo Side Note: I was able to talk to Black and Chris in separate conversation and other members of the crew called later in the day. I missed their calls but I appreciate the fact that they each wanted to call and speak with us. Killa Kyleon was the first to reach out when we missed our first opportunity to speak. I appreciate that BHO!)

Go cop that album, "Serve and Collect" which is in stores now!!

"It's DipSkate" by Queen Princess

Posted at

Whoever says that roller skating is a thing of the past, or simply an activity for little kids is obviously sleep, (literally) or one of those people who uses the wall to help them skate. All across the country there are many talented people who skate professionally as well as on teams, but these days it’s rare to go to a skating rink and see everyday rolling teams practicing. Despite this fact, skating teams do however exist in great numbers.

A documentary film titled Know Difference, produced by The Brown Brothers sparked Dipset artist Jim Jones’ interest in a different kind of business venture. Skaters featured in The Brown Brothers’ film were fans of the Diplomat movement, and Jones thought that teaming up with the freestyle rollers was the perfect thing to do. Exercising philanthropist skills is never a waste of time, especially when the money or effort is being put into a positive cause. Freestyle rolling is described as the combination of skating, music and fashion. Sponsoring freestyle rolling teams is not at all common for record labels, and in my mind the move is an example of Dipset’s motivation, the community.

Recent movies like Roll Bounce and ATL brought attention back to the once overly popular sport of roller skating, but even so, there’s much more going on within the world of roller skating than a few fancy tricks. Hopefully the new found DipSkate movement will turn more than a couple heads for more than a few seconds. It’s not definite, but because Diplomat is a record label, it’s not unlikely that the artists will contribute some exclusive tracks for the team to roll to. Whatever evolves from this project, it’s sure to be a showstopper. I for one am glad to see diversity of financial contribution from a rap record label. This venture proves that hip-hop is more than capable of being the basis of a positive movement.

Introducing "Kristo" + New Single!! (Audio)

Posted at

Word up everybody, Our newest addition to the new artists section is a young cat by the name of Kristo (Bay Area product). I would like to you to check out his new single, "Letter To Hip Hop". It's a well done track and very catchy. Attached is a copy of his relevant bio information (see below) but if that isn't enough check out his myspace page...Show him some HHR respect!

"Letter To Hip Hop" (click to listen)

Bio
In an industry where marketing budgets and gimmicks are often more recognized than actual skills, Bay area born and bred MC/producer Kristo say's he's here to change all that.

Born May 29th 1980, Kristo and his older brother were raised by a single mother who struggled to keep them afloat. Due to given circumstances, he was no stranger to the troubles and adversities of life. Drugs, violence, minimal income, and instability were all too familiar to him. These are some of the reasons he naturally gravitated towards Hip Hop's rugged and urgent allure. "It served as an identity, an outlet, and something I could easily relate to." He said. Kristo credits his upbringing for giving him his intense desire, grittiness, and ability to connect with those in "struggle". He also maintains that aside from everything else he will in someway always speak "to the people and for the people".

Being that he was an 80's baby he caught the tail end of one of Hip Hop's greatest eras. Raised on such legends as Rakim, KRS ONE, Slick Rick, EPMD, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Run DMC and a slew of others, Kristo developed an early love and fascination for Hip Hop. Awe struck by the power of the MC it wasn't long before he was penning his own rhymes. By 16 he had formed a group with some neighborhood kids and began recording and performing. Not long after, the group disbanded and Kristo was faced with the choice to either let it get him down or keep it moving. With the encouragement and support of long time friend and manager Roger "Big Rog" Winder the two pushed on. Kristo adamantly practiced to refine his skills on the mic and by this time had also picked up an MPC 2000 and began producing his own tracks. By 2000 Kristo and Big Rog had formed another group called "Sol Rebelz". With countless performances, two 3 song singles and a full length album under their belts the group received critical acclaim and went on to become local legends.

Backed by Fiyahstorm Records (a label of which he is co- owner) Kristo is stepping out solo with the release of his highly anticipated project entitled "The Weight". On the mic, Kristo comes fully armed with a razor sharp delivery, clever word play and an amazing overall lyrical prowess. He possesses the unique ability to transition from street corner bravado to heartfelt, insightful commentary without missing a step. It is this diversity and range that sets him apart. In his career thus far, Kristo has shared the stage and worked with some of Hip Hop's most elite figures such as: KRS ONE (on tour), Dj Hi-Tek, Method Man, Pharaohe Monche, CL Smooth, Cali Agents (Planet Asia and Rasco), Jean Grae, Pitbull, Nina Sky, Hieroglyphics and the Living Legends. Both fan and artist agree Kristo is one of the premier talents to emerge from the Bay Area hip hop scene.

The streets call him the truth. You can simply call him Kristo.

HipHopRuckus Headz, what's up wit it! Like I said before, we are seriously down with the movement that we have established on the site, whether it be introducing new acts or interviewing your favorite MC. We support it all. I just wanted to introduce another act that my homie D.Myers put me onto. His name is Em Eye See (Mic Mike). Peep this new single by him called "You, You". It's on the smooth tip and is a pleasant break from all the boring rhetoric that u hear alot on the air ways. Nice track and if you want to know more about Em check out his bio and his myspace page for more details. Peace!!

"You" (click to listen)

Bio
"Em Eye See(Mic Mike), its all relevant First and for most, my music iz food for the soul, so don't just listen, come get a plate! I write about my reality, how i see things, and how it effects my life and the people around me I call my style 'Homegrown Intelligence' Reason being, the areas I grew up in didn't have the mainstream outlets to adapt your style to unless you mimicked so-called commercial artists on TV(Fuck that!!) So me and my team had to develop our own style It's like a gumbo of sorts, being born in FL, raised in CT, became a man in SC, and now a Grown Ass Man in MD-DC, you have to incorporate all these style in So from that 'Homegrown Intelligence' was born The motto label iz 'The Train Don't Stop,' which comes from the trails and tribulations that we have overcome on this musical road less traveled No matter what, keep it moving!! Along with my partner Arsun Fist check his my space page and production, son iz fire!!), we have formed a Team IAM (Illness Always Manifested, a combination of ill production, rapid fire flow, and high energy live shows),which will be released on the TDS label Currently we are working on the TDSVol1, A Struggle 2 Get Deep(Arsun Fist Solo),and A Dream Deffered (EM Eye See Solo) We have performed with the likes of DMX, Lil Kim, 112, Big Daddy Kane, and Gangstar, plus our own showcases through out the east coast Take a listen to the songs I have posted from my first Solo album Time Capsule, which will be re-released this year.
