Interview with Devin The Dude & Flo in "10 Shots With Flo Dirt"
Posted at 3/31/2007 07:09:00 PM
What's the Dealy Yo. Writer/Interviewer Extraordinaire, Flo Dirt, had the gracious opportunity to interview Houston's finest rapper/lyrical guru, Devin The Dude. Just last night (3/29/07) the two had a chance to kick it on the interview tip last night and rap about a few things in this latest installment of "10 Shots with Flo Dirt"...Flo Dirt:Ok. #1. Obama or Clinton in ’08? What do you think?
Devin the Dude: Obama or Clinton in 08?
Flo Dirt: Yeah.
Devin the Dude: Oh man, you know what. That might be close.
Flo Dirt: Yeah?
Devin the Dude: That might be a close race but I’ll have to take Clinton in ‘08.
Flo Dirt:Ok. Clinton? Cool. Fo sho!
Devin the Dude: (laughing) Oh Hillary? I forgot Bill can’t be president no more! Ok. Wow. Man if they bring Bill back…
Flo Dirt:Yeah, we’d all vote for Bill again.
Devin the Dude: Yeah man, I know I would.
Flo Dirt: #2. Tell me what’s the difference between Rap-A-Lot in 97 and Rap-A-Lot in 2007 man, and why you’re so loyal to J. Prince.
Devin the Dude: I guess there’s a lot of stuff man. A lot of stuff. There’s so many different realms of rap. Right now, there’s not too many different realms and not too many stages. And loyalty? It’s always been a family thing. He always just gave me room to be as creative as possible and feel free to go out there and be my own way. A lot of companies, they want to structure the artist.
Flo Dirt: #3. Tell me, because I heard the last Hi-Tek album. You’ve always been one of the people that’s able to bridge the gap between regional hip hop. Tell me what that’s like to be able to work with people as varied as Hi-Tek and De La and the Roots, as well as people like David Banner and UGK from the south.
Devin the Dude: Man, it’s actually overwhelming. I’m at a loss for words for that. When they ask you to be a part of that it’s kind of surprising sometimes because like De La Soul and Dilated Peoples and Raphael Saadiq. I just like to see these artists that I listen to and respect and everything. When I find out they listen to me and want me to be a part of their thing, I’m almost at a loss for words.Flo Dirt:It’s just on the love, huh?
Devin the Dude: Yeah.
Flo Dirt: #4. Tell me what can you absolutely not do unless you’re high, like you can’t function unless you’re high?
Devin the Dude: Ummm. I hate to say this but I can’t be in the studio working all day without any weed. I don’t want to say I can’t do it, but it would be hard! (laughs)
Flo Dirt: #5. This being your 4th solo project, which one has been your favorite so far and do you miss the Facemob and Odd Squad group thing?
Devin the Dude: Well, The Squad is still here man. We always been close friends and partners even before the contract. Music was our hobby. We had about 30 songs before we even had a name for the group. And my favorite album I guess… I don’t know if I have a favorite but I had a lot of fun on “The Dude” album. It was a lot of fun and carefree, no expectations; just do your thing. And between The Dude and this one right here, it’s kind of close. Pretty much kind of the same close knit air where everything is settled. We listen to the track for as long as we want. Leave it and come back to it the next day, touch it up some more and just concentrate on what we’re doing. It’s a lot more comfortable on this one.
Flo Dirt: #6. Tell me if you have a guilty pleasure music-wise. Like, right now, for me, I’m stuck on this Amy Winehouse cd and I’m a BIG New Edition fan. Is there something that’s just your guilty pleasure right now?
Devin the Dude: Laughs. You a big New Edition fan?
Flo Dirt: I love New Edition, man! I can’t help it!
Devin the Dude: Man, me too! Your homeboys could not be Ralph, nigga. I was Ralph!!!
Flo Dirt: Exactly!
Devin the Dude: No man, but I listen to the Allman Brothers. When I play it or mention it, people look at me like “What?” Or like Randy Travis and Ronnie Milsap.Flo Dirt: #7. Here’s the question I ask everybody and I’m real curious to see what your answers are. Give me your Top 5 Emcees.
Devin the Dude: Wow! I know as soon as I give some answers I’ll find some more but uh… I’ll go with: T La Rock, Rakim, Ghostface, Run, MC Shan.
Flo Dirt: MC Shan?
Devin the Dude: Man, damn! (laughing)
Flo Dirt: Hell yeah!!
(Both laughing)
Flo Dirt: #8. Myspace has been jumpin’ off a lot lately, but tell me how often are you on, what do you use it for and is it a useful tool?
Devin the Dude: I’m on there about once or twice a week to catch up on things. I think it’s a wonderful tool. It’s a great promotional tool. I use it to check my comments and my friends to see how they feel about the projects I’m working on. I use it to update them on future shows and my whereabouts.
Flo Dirt: #9. Is there anybody that you haven’t worked with yet that you would pay money to get on a track with you?
Devin the Dude: That’s a long list right there! Another long list. I was blessed to get Snoop, Andre 3000, Lil Wayne and Bun B on this project. I don’t usually have a lot of features on my albums. Nas and Xzibit. That was a good thing.
Flo Dirt:Yeah that was a dope song. Were you actually n the studio with Nas and Xzibit?
Devin the Dude: I was actually in LA. Xzibit came by the studio and Nas came by the studio too. They were real cool people.Flo Dirt: You definitely have worked a ton of people. What I’ve heard so far of the album is incredible. I’m a big Devin fan.
Devin the Dude: Appreciate that, Flo.
Flo Dirt: #10. Last question. Dr. Dre or DJ Premier. Who you got?
Devin the Dude: Who I got?
Flo Dirt: Yeah I know you’ve worked with both of em...
Devin the Dude: Man, I’d have a studio with a studio A and a studio B in that mutha… (laughing)
Flo Dirt: Man, when you ask anyone who’s a hip hop head like ourselves, they are the two top producers ever. You’ve been lucky enough and talented enough to work with both of them
Devin the Dude: Man, if they worked together it would be a miracle.
Flo Dirt: Yeah, it’s like that Rakim album we’ve been waiting on.
Devin the Dude: It’s hard for me to pick out of the two. That’s impossible to pick one over the other. They’re both incredible.
Flo Dirt: All right then, Devin! I appreciate your time. You got anything else for hiphopruckus?
Devin the Dude: Much love! Keep doing it big and makin moves. Much success to what yall doin and I appreciate the support and being concerned with what I’m doing.
Flo Dirt: I appreciate the time once again, take care of yourself and good luck.
Devin the Dude: Cool cool. Man, thanks!
-Flo Dirt side-note… Devin was the coolest dude I have ever talked to! For someone that has worked with some of the greatest people in the business, his sincerity and humility are real and you can’t help but respect that. This is someone we all should be supporting. Thanks, Devin for being good for hip hop… And funny as hell!!!). Go get his new album "Waiting to Inhale" if you get a chance, it's a great LP!
