Co-Founders Of Rawkus Records Address El-P’s Attack
Posted at 3/09/2007 02:42:00 PM
Yo word up, check out some new beef shit. This time some unknown mad-rapper group named El-P (who the hell are these clowns?) try to put the smack down on Rawkus Records and Puff Daddy in an interview on HipHopdx. Click Here to Read
After getting wind of this, the Co-Founders of Rawkus Records (Jarret Myer & Brian Brater) strike back at El-P in this letter addressed to them:
We thought the photo of you and Puff was cool. We posted it without comment. We immediately removed it upon request. But you had to go there... Straight attack our credibility and intentions with that slanderous rant. Keep in mind WE HAVEN'T SAID A WORD to you since 1998. Why are you salty? Be happy, you are successful and rich. Regardless of our obvious distaste for one another, we’ve admired Def Jux's success and sincerely respect your roster of artists. But you had to go there......
El-P, your recent post has drawn attention to our intentions as promoters and marketers in the Hip Hop community. Haters, like you, seem to suffer from historical amnesia. We thought it was time we directly addressed the Hiphop community and post some facts.
Our mission at Rawkus.com is to create a vibrant supportive community for hip hop, including all factions and styles. The post showing El-P and Puffy was in no way meant to discredit El-P as an artist or producer. Puffy is a mogul and his appearance with an underground artist like El-P was news worthy and interesting. However, we have a strict policy against creating bullshit beefs and reserve the right to delete comments and posts that overtly create hate instead of fostering creative debate. This post was removed once it was brought to our attention that El-P was offended by it.
For the past ten years our mission has been to help artists promote and make money---a mission we were very successful at. We have contributed HEAVY financial resources into promoting Black Star, Mos Def, Kweli, Pharoahe Monche, Big L and many other underground artists in our history of Soundbombing, Lyricist Lounge, and 100s of 12” releases.
Our history is full of success and breakthroughs. Mos Def and Kweli have sold almost 1.5 million albums each and are both powerful stars now. While we worked together, Pharoahe Monche had two huge hits (“Simon Says” and “Oh No”) and sold almost 300,000 albums. We supported Common during his label transition by successfully promoting “Respiration” and “1999.” Big L went GOLD! The Soundbombing and Lyricist Lounge compilations sold over 1 million copies. Remember "Body Rock”, “Definition", "Ms. Fat Booty", "Umi Says”, “Simon Says", "The Light”, “Respiration", "My Life", "The Blast", "Get By", "Oh No", "Flamboyant”, “Fortified Live", "Universal Magnetic" and "End to End Burners"?
Of course we could not hit home runs every time, and some VERY talented artists experienced frustration as Rawkus hit temporary obstacles in dealing with MCA/Universal in 2003-2004. Everybody knows how treacherous the music industry is. If you stay in it long enough, you will have your fair share of doors slammed in your face- we have! You stay in the game because your will to succeed, far out weighs your fear of defeat. We are proud of RAWKUS.COM's growing community of driven artists and individuals. While the game has changed, our mission at RAWKUS is still on point; market and promote NEW under-appreciated artists and respect the older generation of hip hop. We firmly believe the community should decide the value of music, not critics or haters.
Like I asked before, who the hell are these clowns?

The “Endangered Species”...Big Hawk
Posted at 3/09/2007 09:09:00 AM
To all Big Hawk Fans, John Hawkins (November 15, 1969 – May 1, 2006), better known as the Screwed Up Click’s 5 Star General, Big Hawk, HaDubK, or H.A.W.K., will have an all, new album "Endangered Species" released on 5/1/07, which is exactly one year from the date of his untimely death. He was a well established rapper from Houston, Texas that started rapping in 1992 when his younger brother, the late, great Fat Pat, took him to DJ Screw’s house. Hawk and Pat went on to become original members of the late DJ Screw’s rap posse called The Screwed Up Click (S.U.C.). After huge success on countless screw tapes the two brothers decided to start elevating their game. Pat’s “Ghetto Dream” was to help bring not just Houston, but the entire south to the forefront of the rap industry. In 1994 Hawk, Pat, Screw and some of their good friends, KK and Koldjack, collaborated to form the group D.E.A. and Dead End Records (named for the dead end block of MLK where Hawk grew up). In late 1995 D.E.A. released an original independent album entitled, “Screwed For Life” featuring Lil KeKe, Pokey and the rest of the S.U.C.; a southern classic that can still empty shelves. After the deaths of Hawk’s brother (Fat Pat) and DJ Screw and the incarceration of many others, Hawk’s ultimate mission and goal became keeping the “Ghetto Dream” alive. In 1999, Hawk participated in a SouthSide Playaz compilation album titled “You Got Us Fuxxed Up,” with Mike D, 3-2, Claydoe and other members of the S.U.C. In 2000 Hawk kept mashing and released his first solo album, “Unda HAWK’s Wings.” Also that same year Hawk scored a feature on the platinum hit “Wanna Be a Baller” by Lil Troy. Hawk traveled all over the world performing and when he returned home he quit his steady job of 10 years to pursue music 100%. In 2001, Hawk established “Ghetto Dreams Ent.” in honor of his late brother Fat Pat. He then collaborated with Lil O on the smash hit, “Back Back Give Me 50 Feet.” Next, he partnered with Game Face Records in 2002 and released his first album under his label Ghetto Dreams Ent., self titled, “HAWK.” With the hit song, “U Already Know,” the album charted the Billboard’s list of top R&B and Rap Albums at no. 45. It was at Game Face Records where Hawk met and clicked with a young up and coming group called the GritBoyz and an artist named Starchy Archy. He quickly grew a liking to them and their bond grew strong.
Hawk and Ghetto Dreams Ent. teamed up with Presidential Records in 2003 to release “A Bad Azz Mix Tape Vol. II.” A year later he and KeKe teamed up to release “Wreckin 2K4” with Presidential Records as well. It was around this time when the original S.U.C. members, along with M.J. (of Southside Studios) started collaborating on a group/compilation album titled “The Takeover.” The original Screwed Up Click Members (Lil KeKe, Fat Pat, Hawk, Pokey, Mike D, Big Moe, ESG, 3-2, Lil O, Z-Ro, Trae, Lil Flip, Botany Boyz, Chris Ward, Grace and others) had not come together since DJ Screw’s passing and this became Hawk’s main goal. He was featured on the popular single “Swang” by Trae in 2005 that included a tribute to Fat Pat.
Hawk was a huge sports fan and had the opportunity to record a song with Clint Dempsey/Deuce of the U.S. 2006 National Soccer Team for Nike’s “Joga Bonita” World Cup called “Don’t Tread.” In April of 2006 Hawk married his longtime girlfriend and mother of his two children, Meshah Henderson. Also that same month Hawk appeared in Source Magazine in an article titled “Riders on the Storm.” He was genuinely happy and excited about all of the recognition Houston was finally starting to get; the “Ghetto Dream” was becoming real. Hawk’s reputation of hard work, professionalism, honesty, and humbleness allowed him to inspire and mentor artists that he would meet. He grew so popular among the southern underground circuit that everyone wanted to work with him just to meet him (plus he jammed!). As a result, Hawk has tons and tons of songs recorded with people all throughout the south and the world.
Hawk and the S.U.C. helped pioneer the underground Houston rap culture; breaking ground for other Houston artists like Paul Wall, Chamillionaire, Mike Jones, Lil Flip and Slim Thug (friends and co-workers whom Hawk respected) and paving the way for them to achieve worldwide success. Although legendary in the streets, the S.U.C. still strives for worldwide success and recognition of a culture, style, and vocabulary they created in Houston to be honored – the “Ghetto Dream.” Hawk put his solo project, “Endangered Species” on the back burner to pursue the “Ghetto Dream” and mash for the S.U.C. He was perfecting his art; patiently waiting for his time to open the doors for once and for all. Unfortunately, his dream was cut short on May 1, 2006 when he was mysteriously murdered. Since Hawk’s untimely death, his story has appeared in several magazines such as Source, Ozone, Streetwize, Block to Block, and XXL. Hawk was an EXTRAordinary rapper and man with very rare qualities such as honesty, integrity, compassion, loyalty and fairness – an “Endangered Species.” HAWK IS AN ICON AND WILL FOREVER BE MISSED!!! WE LOVE YOU HAWK AND GHETTO DREAMS WILL BE FULFILLED!!!!!!!!!!!!Share It: Digg | My Google | My Yahoo 0 Comments | Comment?

A Nation Divided By Flo Dirt
Posted at 3/09/2007 08:41:00 AM
Where I work, there are mostly younger, Caucasian kids. I’m 32 and grew up on all kinds of music, but hip-hop raised me. Without a father in my house, that void was filled by male figures in hip-hop: Run, LL, Chuck D., Ice Cube, 2Pac. I take this very seriously and extremely personal. I have an issue with where we are headed as a hip-hop nation. Everyday at my job, we have a morning meeting. I have started to randomly quiz the other guys at work with rap quotes. The most recent one was, “Radio… Suckas never play me.” Oh my God, man, it took them two hours and still no answer. Even the other semi-hip-hop head in the building was stumped and he knows more Ghostface than I do! COME ON!!If we look at other genres, there is no question that they studied the history of their music, which is essentially our music anyway. There would be no Tom Morello or John Frusciante without Hendrix or Clapton. There would be no Joshua Redman without Charlie Parker. Man, there wouldn’t even be a Tim McGraw without a Hank Williams or Johnny Cash! An overused, but entirely true, adage is that you have to know where you came from to know where you are going. This applies to hip-hop whether you want to believe that or not!
I was deep into one of my favorite magazines recently and they interviewed some new cat from Florida. He said outright, without any concern, that he doesn’t ca
