Breakdancing For Cancer
Posted at 2/24/2007 10:37:00 AM
Since 2003, Sole Power Productions has been a leader in Entertainment, Event Production, Artist Management, Interactive DJ, Dance, Urban and Live Music industries in Toronto and across Canada. In the last year, our operations have expanded into New York, Miami, and across Europe. Our DJs, Dancers, and Musicians have worked with the likes of Alicia Keys, James Brown, Al Green, Black Eyed Peas, Sean Paul, John Legend, Nelly Furtado, and many more. Check www.solepowerproductions.com for detailed info.
A key member of the Sole Power family has been BBOY Troy, aka “Whiplash”. Troy is one of Canada’s premiere breakdancers, and has performed with K-os, Talib Kweli, Our Lady Peace, and was one of the lead dancers in the Mirvish production of Lord of the Rings. Currently, Troy is also a member of the Toronto Raptors Breakdance Squad. In February 2007, Troy lost his father Warren Arnold Feldman, to liver cancer. In his memory, Troy and Sole Power President Abby Tobias have joined forces to produce and execute BREAKIN’ FOR CANCER; The Guinness Book of World Records LONGEST BREAKDANCE CIRCLE. The event will raise funds for both the Canadian Cancer Society, and specifically towards families in need of funds due to a loss from cancer. 100% of the profits will go towards the charities.
Sole Power has teamed up with SURESH JOACHIM for this event. If you don’t recognize the name, Suresh is a multi Guinness world record holder. He currently holds 39 world records, the second highest in the world. Suresh will compete as one of the six to twelve dancers. He has donated his time to help achieve yet another record. For more info on him, please check www.sureshjoachim.com.
The event will feature Scratch Lab DJ Institute (www.scratchlab.ca), Canada’s first DJ school. Scratch Lab will be providing all of the DJs to play along side the dancers for the event. The biggest name DJ’s across the city will be spinning, including DJ Starting From Scratch (Flow 93.5fm), Baba Kahn (three time DJ of the year), Jr Flo (World I.T.F champion), and DJ Grouch (North American Turntable champion, Melanie Durrant).
BREAKIN’ FOR CANCER will be taking place at Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre, located at 1 Bass Pro Mills Drive, Vaughan, Ontario. We will be situated in the centre of the mall at the heavily visited Roadside Picnic food court area. The event will begin at 3pm on March 23rd, 2007, and will run until (minimally) 3pm on March 24th, 2007. To achieve the record, six to twelve dancers must breakdance for at least twenty-four hours consistently. The dance team that will be participating consists of some of the top dancers from across the country. We have assembled an all star cast of dancers to insure that not only the record will be achieved, but that it is done in an entertaining atmosphere.
The event will be broadcast live on Sat by FLO 93.5FM, and will feature Flo personalities, and celebrities.
In compliance with the Guinness Book, The Canadian Cancer Society, and Vaughan Mills, this event demands not only extensive planning, but also will have costs associated with putting it on. Between judges, nurses, insurance, technical, sound and PA, labor, trucking, food and beverage, ect costs will accumulate. We are looking to individuals and organizations to support this great cause. Through financial donations and sponsorships, we hope to reach our goal set at $20,000. This great cause deserves at least that.
Please contact Amy Linton at the Canadian Cancer Society at 416 638 0771 to make a donation with your credit card over the phone, or send a cheque, made payable to the Canadian Cancer Society RE: Breakin’ For Cancer to 620 Wilson Ave, Ontario, M3P 3K9. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
For Sponsorship opportunities, or more detailed info about the event, please contact Abby Tobias, at Sole Power, 416 663 7653 or by email at daveweisz@solepowerproductions.com.

Common doesn't like Lacrosse
Posted at 2/23/2007 12:37:00 PM
QuickNews: According to Pr-Inside, Chicagoan MC, Common, will be performing at Duke University on 4/7/07 even amid past controversy sparked by last year's Lacrosse team scandal. And get this...the university is supposedly up in arms about the performance but will go thru with it, because of contract obligations...even after the rapper was quoting as saying this about the team at a recent concert, "You know I never get lost, yo f**k them damn n**gers from Duke lacrosse."

Young Jeezy and The Game Team Up
Posted at 2/23/2007 11:47:00 AM
Boost Mobile RockCorps (BMRC), the national youth volunteerism movement that has motivated more than 16,000 young people to get involved and help their communities, announced on 2/21 that recording artists Korn, The Game, +44, Rise Against and Young Jeezy are to perform at this year's first-ever BMRC concert event at LA's Kodak Theatre on March 30. The concert will reward 3,000 hard-working local youth who have volunteered four hours of community service through BMRC to earn tickets to this ultra-exclusive event.
RockCorps, an organization harnessing the power of music to inspire volunteerism, and Boost Mobile, a wireless telecommunications brand dedicated to boosting the lives of today's youth, continue their highly successful partnership for the third year in a row. BMRC exposes young people to simple and fun ways they can proactively contribute to their neighborhoods and positively transform society. Combining the power of music, community and volunteerism, Boost Mobile RockCorps will offer entrance to this summer's most popular concerts for which the only way in is to earn tickets by contributing four hours of volunteer service.
A recent comparison of BMRC and non-BMRC participants illustrates the impact of the program on today's young people. Findings suggest close to 80% of BMRC volunteers are likely to volunteer again in the future - without a concert ticket/reward. Additionally, 73% of participants who attended the BMRC concert conveyed it gave them a sense of how powerful volunteer work can be. Music has the power to bring people together, and Boost Mobile RockCorps is channeling this power as a catalyst for making volunteering cool and relevant to today's youth.
BMRC 2007 kicked off in Los Angeles in early February with a diverse roster of volunteer projects and partnerships involving local LA youth that will culminate with the unprecedented concert event at the Kodak Theater. Major reward concert events are also scheduled to take place at Atlanta's Fox Theatre and New York City's legendary Radio City Music Hall later this year, with additional tour stops to be announced next month.
Last year's BMRC program made stops in Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. By the end of the 2006 tour, BMRC volunteers had contributed approximately 40,000 hours of community service and transformed close to 125 project sites in eight cities across the country.
Youth interested in becoming part of the Boost Mobile RockCorps movement can call BMRC at 1-888-ROCK-889, or log onto www.boostmobilerockcorps.com for more information and to register for membership. BMRC members will be notified of volunteer opportunities in their area.
