DJ Premier Primes Albums for Nas... And Whitney Houston?
Posted at 10/14/2006 04:44:00 AM
Legendary producer DJ Premier may be heading into the studio with R&B diva Whitney Houston in the near future.According to a recent interview with Billboard.com Premier is close to securing production work with Houston as she prepares to hit the comeback trail.
"I'm not gonna jinx it but there [have] been talks and I've met with the right people so if that goes down I'd love to give her a big record," DJ Premier told Billboard.com. "I know what she needs. I'm not gonna give her a record about rolling on dubs and all that just because that's what's current. That's beneath her. She can go left field as long as the record's banging and she sings it well."
Houston, who recently reunited with J Records Clive Davis has graced headlines for her battles with drug addiction and her recent decision to file for divorce from her husband of 14 years, singer Bobby Brown. However, after recently co-producing Christina Aguilera's chart topping pop album Back to Basics, Premier believes he can help Whitney regain her footing in the industry.
"She deserves another chance," he told Billboard.com. "I won't misguide her career and give her some bullshit [track]."
Premier has also been in the studio for another legend recently, rapper Nas. The pair previously worked together to craft the 1994 classic debut album Illmatic and have reunited for Nas' Def Jam album Hip Hop Is Dead...The N which is due out on December 19th.
"We did one song for the [new] album but we haven't mixed it yet," Premier told Billboard.com. "I don't know what the latest [release date] is but I think he should wait 'til next year, personally, to really make a classic bomb. He can do it but I think he needs more time. Whatever he chooses, he's got my support."
The album cut should be a prelude to the full length collaborative project that the two have long discussed making.
"[Nas] told me he wants the next album to be the one that we finally do, just me and him, all the way through -- just a Premier and Nas album," says Premier. "We'll see if that goes down."
In addition to Nas and Whitney, Premier is also currently working with Amerie, Canibus and two rappers from his label Year Round, NYGz and Blaq Poe. He also had his own album A Man of Few Words which is currently on hold.
"[It's] still on the table. I just put it on hold for me to really get my artists out there first because they're gonna make my album grow," Premier told Billboard.com. "[Then] we'll be recognized for bringing new, good hip-hop to the table."

Diddy claims he never loved ex-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez
Posted at 10/13/2006 08:05:00 AM
The hip-hop mogul has admitted that throughout his relationship with J.Lo he was still in love with Kim Porter, the mother of his eight-year-old son, Christian, and the woman who is now pregnant with his twin daughters.Diddy, 36, said: "When I was with Jennifer I got caught up. She was fine. The hype can pull you together, and it's feeling good, and the relationship is genuine. There was love there, but it just wasn't this type of love." The rapper, real name Sean Combs, sings about Lopez - who is now married to Latin star Marc Antony - and Porter on his new album 'Press Play'.
But Diddy insists the mother of his children was his true muse. He said: "The relationship that gave me the most inspiration was the relationship with Kim. It's my most long-term relationship. It's had a lot of ups and downs, and it made for a lot of great songs." Diddy and Porter dated in the 90s and had son Christian together.
The rap star was in a high profile relationship with Lopez in 2000 but they split within a year and in 2003 he and Porter rekindled their romance. She is now pregnant with twin girls and Diddy has vowed to make her his wife. The star also has a 12-year-old son, Justin, from a previous relationship.

Drag-On Leaves Ruff Ryders; Launches New Label
Posted at 10/13/2006 07:45:00 AM
After 10 years in the game with the Ruff Ryders, Drag-On is ready to step out on his own and take his destiny into his own hands, as he launches his own label, Hood Environment.Although the rapper moved over a million units sold with his former label, he felt it was time to go the indie route, putting out his own music, so he wouldn't have to wait on anybody but himself.
"My back was kind of forced against the wall. I've been grinding for like 10 years and [the Ruff Ryders] only got two albums on me," Drag-On told BallerStatus.net. "That's not how my work ethic is. I know my joints should have been more dropping than that. I should of been on my fifth or sixth album by now. So, right now, I'mma make it all up with my Hood Environment, my own record label."
And with the experiences he's went through in his own career, Drag-On feels as though he has the knowledge to run his label smoothly.
"I've been in the game for 10 years, grinding and putting out hits. I'm still young, but I've learned enough to know what it is to run a label," explained the rapper. "I know what it takes to break an artist. Those are tricks of the trade that I studied within my career."
Drag-On hasn't had a commercial release since 2003's Hell And Back, but he hasn't been stagnate. He's actually been in the studio working on multiple projects with many different artists such as Baby from Cash Money and D.M.X.
He's also released five mixtapes, and is currently working on the first release under Hood Environment named after the label, which features Drag-On and his artists Terra Da Dude, Eyez B and Glockman.
The first single, "Shoe Box," is currently out and making its rounds on the internet and radio on the East Coast.
"We just breaking the ice [with 'Shoe Box'] because I know my fans have been waiting for a long time," said Drag-On. "So now, they definitely can hear me through Hood Environment. That's just breaking the ice for my artists, label and company as a whole."
As far as his relationship with his former label, Ruff Ryders, the rapper and new CEO says, "I haven't really been around them; I'm just really staying focused on my own thing right now. I got my own thing jumping off right now and everybody's lovin' it, so I'm just appreciating the streets right now."

MUSIC | VIDEOS | INTERVIEWS | NEW ARTIST | HOMEFilmmaker Derek Cianfrance offers black-and-white ‘Portrait of Sean Combs.’
Posted at 10/12/2006 05:50:00 AM
You think you know all there is to know about Sean “Diddy” Combs? Filmmaker Derek Cianfrance says he’s got details the rap mogul has never before spoken about in his television documentary, “Black And White: A Portrait Of Sean Combs,” which is scheduled to premiere on BET Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. ET.Shot entirely in black and white, the interview was filmed during the course of a single day between 12 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on July 22, 2006. It features Diddy alone on camera as he reflects on the murder of his father, the loss of his virginity, the death of his closest friend Biggie, the tragedies that have surrounded him and the dreams that he has made reality.
"Derek brought things out of me that I had never spoken about publicly before," Diddy said in a statement. "We talked for hours that night, until the sun came up, and it became very much about the raw emotions I was feeling and the thoughts I had never expressed. It was one of the most powerful and moving experiences of my life."
The interview is one of many activities the mogul has done in promotion of his Oct. 17 release “Press Play,” featuring the first single “Come to Me” with Nicole Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls and other guest performers Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx, Big Boi, Timbaland, Brandy, Cee-Lo, Ciara, Keyshia Cole, Nas and Twista.
Production on the CD was handled by Kanye West, Just Blaze, Pharrell Williams, Havoc from Mobb Deep, Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas, and Rich Harrison, among others.
