DJ Webstar Taking 'Chicken Noodle Soup' To Harlem
Posted at 9/23/2006 10:17:00 AM
Webstar, the teen behind the hit single "Chicken Noodle Soup," is gearing up for the release of his debut album, Caught In The Web, on Tuesday (September 26). And on the same day of the release, he plans to throw a free block party in Harlem, New York to celebrate. The block party begins at 1 p.m. EST and will commence through 6 p.m. at Rucker Park. There will be free food, fun, on site album sales and a live Webstar & Young B performance.
"Chicken Noodle Soup" was inspired this past spring by a dance of the same name. When 19-year-old Troy "Webstar" Ryan and 16-year-old Bianca "Young B" Dupree began experiencing the craze, they teamed up to write the music and lyrics of the track. The result combines a thumping bass drum beat, an air raid siren, and Young B's girlish style with the lyrics, "Chicken noodle soup, chicken noodle soup, chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side."
At a moment when most of hip-hop's dance records are coming from the South, Webstar and Young B have created one that stands has become a national underground phenomenon, generating over 8,000 videos and over 1 million views on YouTube.com.
"Every generation or so, the way we create, market, sell, and buy music changes," states Kirk Burrowes, deal broker and co-executive producer of "Chicken Noodle Soup." "This record is a new media phenomenon. Webstar, Arthur Smith and the Scrilla Organization are leading the pack. I am proud to deliver this cultural movement, just as I was proud to deliver the Bad Boy cultural movement in the 90's."
"Chicken Noodle Soup" had already taken off at the uptown parties where Webstar deejayed, but it shifted into overdrive on June 22 when he played it at Rucker Park in Harlem during its yearly basketball tournament. The crowd in attendance went crazy when they heard it and Hot 97's DJ Enuff said, "I need that record." Six weeks later, "Chicken Noodle Soup" was playing on hip-hop mix shows from coast to coast, including New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, and San Diego.
Although Webstar is only 19, he is already a veteran DJ and party promoter in the teen scene, having played parties in Harlem, the Bronx and throughout the tri-state area since 2001. Now, with the success of this new single, he has taken his movement to Universal Republic, secured his own Fontana distribute label launching Scrilla Hill Entertainment.
"With the success of 'Chicken Noodle Soup' on the internet and in the streets of New York, we were able to create a unique situation with Universal Republic and Fontana," said Scrilla Hill co-label head, Arthur Smith. "Not only do we have a label where we can develop new upcoming acts, we have the ability to upstream any projects that are taking off, like 'Chicken Noodle Soup,' on Universal Republic."
DJ Webstar's Caught In The Web drops on September 26.

The nominations for the 2006 American Music Awards were announced earlier this week and hip-hop artists like Kanye West, T.I. and the Black Eyed Peas are all in the running for more than one award.
Nominees in pop/rock, country, soul/rhythm & blues, rap/hip-hop, Latin, alternative, contemporary inspirational and adult contemporary categories were announced by Carmen Electra and Tyrese at a press conference on Tuesday September 19th.
The Black Eyed Peas matched Mariah Carey, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nickelback with three nominations for the award show, which will be held November 21 at L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium. Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx, T.I. and the Pussycat Dolls each received two nominations.
This year the AMA's eliminated the favorite female rap/hip-hop artist category because less than five artists met the minimum eligibility requirements.
The 2006 American Music Awards will air on ABC on November 21 at 8pm EST.

DJ Warrior, the self-proclaimed West Coast Mixtape King, debuted Cali Untouchable Radio on Sirius Satellite Tuesday (September 19), and reveals that his main goal is to help the Left Coast's thriving music scene.
"[Cali Untouchable Radio] is the hottest radio show on the West Coast for satellite radio," DJ Warrior told BallerStatus.com. "There's gonna be real DJ's that do real deal sh--. It's like a Wake Up Show, but more grimy, more street. Our whole goal is to promote West Coast artists to the fullest, whether they're independent, unsigned or signed. It doesn't matter, as long as they're from the West Coast."
The newly launched show will feature new music from mostly West Coast artists, but will also include new music from other regions as well. According to DJ Warrior though, 65%-70% will be California-based artists being played.
Warrior has a lot of big plans for his Cali Untouchable Radio. And, instead of giving himself all the shine, he plans to give his crew of six DJs -- including DJ Strong, DJ Nutty, DJ Fatal, DJ Birdy Bird and DJ Deftone -- the chance for exposure as well. But, that's not it. Aside from his immediate crew, he will give up the mic from time to time to showcase some of the West's other DJ's who aren't normally recognized as much as they should be.
"I plan to showcase a lot of other hot DJs on the West Coast that don't get a lot of exposure," Warrior explained. "So, we're gonna call them up and how them come through to do a show. Basically, this show is gonna show a lot of DJs, a lot of love, that we're cool with, know and respect."
One thing is certain in the long list of plans for Cali Untouchable Radio, that is exclusive music.
"There's a lot of material you'll hear on the show, that you won't hear anywhere else 'cause I own those songs," the DJ said firmly. "This show's gonna have the most exclusive West Coast on it, period. Expect to see a lot of big rappers, actors, etc."
Cali Untouchable Radio airs on Sirius Satellite's Hip Hop Nation on channel 40 Tuesdays beginning at 11 p.m. PST. Fan can send in song requests to CURadio@sirius-radio.com.
In addition, DJ Warrior and his partner DJ Strong, continue their grind on the mixtape scene. In July and August, the pair flooded the market with a staggering 18 mixtapes, including Cali Untouchable Radio 12 with the Dogg Pound, Cali Untouchable Radio 11 with Ice Cube, and the Best Of Both Hoodz Vol. 1, introducing singer Tyrese's rapper alter-ego Black Ty.
The driving factor behind the mixtape flood is that the crew feels they have to show and prove why they call themselves the West Coast Mixtape Kings.
"We're just letting people know who really does it out here," said Warrior. "We're the real DJ's from L.A., who are dropping mixtapes on a national level. We do this sh-- day to day. There's a lot dudes running around talkin' sh--, dropping three tapes a year, talking about they doing something. You gotta respect what we are, because we made this sh-- official for all these motherf---ers that are doing this right now."
With all the hard work they've put in the past few months, you'd think they'd take a little break, but that thought hasn't crossed their minds. The crew is working on a distribution deal for their own imprint, HipHopWest Records.
And Warrior is working on his official album through DJ Muggs' Angeles Records, titled Cali Untouchable Radio: the Prequel. Following that release will be a major label release, according to the DJ.
"When I say major release, expect to see four or five videos, singles on the radio, all that sh--," said Warrior. "The label I'm working with is gonna push me like any other artist to the effect of a Game or 50 Cent."

Here's what people are saying about Panacea:
“Off the charts.” – Ben Harper
“Panacea is the future.” – Raheem DeVaughn
"Panacea is exploring uncharted musical territory. I love these cats." - Ommas (SA-RA)
“Panacea navigate their own path to the timeless destination of creative, original Hip Hop music.” – Thes One (People Under The Stairs)
Panacea’s ears are itching, because people are talking about them. Is it hype? Maybe. Is it warranted? No question. Every few years a new artist comes along that changes fans’ notions of what they can hope for from a trip to the record store. In 2006, that artist is Panacea. Producer K-Murdock paints lush soundscapes where organic drums, horns and pianos go head-to-head with space age bleeps and blips. Tempos and moods run the gamut from slow and contemplative to rapid fire and bouncy. Emcee Raw Poetic handles the vocal work thoughtfully. His rhymes are often conversational, always fresh. Panacea’s sound has drawn comparisons to Outkast and The Roots, but their style is truly all their own. A few years down the line, emerging artists can only hope for comparisons to Panacea.
