Wyclef Jean Works with Asian Pop Star Sun
Posted at 8/12/2006 05:03:00 PM
Rapper/producer Wyclef Jean is collaborating with multiplatinum Asian pop star Sun on the singer's forthcoming U.S. album. The duo has been recording at Jean's Platinum Sound Recording Studio in New York and is working on an as yet unnamed single.
Sun describes the track as a feel-good song with lyrics that "tell everyone to get to the dance floor and dance away your problems. Who can't relate to that?"
"There are a few words in the song that may be difficult for most people to understand and with good reason," she said. "They're in my native language Mandarin."
Widely known as Singapore's equivalent to Madonna, Sun has enjoyed success mainly overseas.
The singer's U.S. album follows a string of singles, including international hits "Without Love" and "Ends of the Earth."
"I just love her voice and she is an artist I can really create something for and with," Jean stated about Sun, who expressed similar enthusiasm about working with the Fugees member. "He is fiercely passionate about the music and I hope everyone can catch this feeling as they listen," she said.
"Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, Shakira, and Sun--What do they have in common?" said Jean. "They all bring their culture to their music. They say, 'This is who I am and who I represent. You're either gonna ride with me or you're not!'"
Other producers and songwriters contributing to the project include Denise Rich, Donna Summer, Desmond Child, Underdogs, and Diane Warren.

T.I. and Common Join American Gangster Cast
Posted at 8/12/2006 05:00:00 PM
T.I. may be the “King of the South” when it comes to rap, but he’s not above showing a little humility when it comes to talking about his new movie role. The ATL-rapper/actor recently signed on to join Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington in the Ridley Scott-produced film American Gangster.
“Man, that’s my internship into the field,” T.I. told mtv.com about working with such accomplished actors. "It's like I'm going to school and learning from the best in the business. I'm looking forward to [American Gangster], and I'm honored."
The Scarface-like film, set in the 1970s, is about a police detective (Crowe) in pursuit of a Harlem drug lord (Washington), reports mtv.com.
Rapper Common will also make an appearance in American Gangster, as the brother to Washington’s character, as will Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA.
Filming begins next week in New York City. American Gangster will hit theaters in 2007.

Lil’ Kim Seeks Release from Atlantic Records
Posted at 8/12/2006 04:55:00 PM
Lil’ Kim is reportedly unhappy with her situation at Atlantic Records, and is seeking a release from her contract, according to a report from MTV. In a statement, her lawyer L. Londell McMillan commented, “We are having discussions which I cannot confirm the details [of] at this time. However, we do wish Atlantic would release and simply free Kim.” McMillan’s statement contradicts recent rumors that Kim had already been dropped by the label as a result of lackluster sales of her fourth studio LP, The Naked Truth. The Brooklyn rapper was incarcerated on federal perjury charges just days before the release of the album, and as a result had little opportunity to promote the project. In related news, Kim is currently working on the second season of her BET reality series Countdown To Lockdown, which will document her release from the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia on July 3rd and her subsequent return home.

ALFONSO RIBEIRO FILES FOR DIVORCE: Actor also prepares for new Fox reality series “Celebrity Duets.”
Posted at 8/11/2006 10:43:00 AM
Alfonso Ribeiro, the original Tap Dance Kid and star of such sitcoms as "Silver Spoons" and "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," has reportedly filed for divorce from his wife Robin after four years of marriage. According to TMZ.com, Wednesday’s filing cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. The couple got married in January 2002 and have one child together, 3-year-old Sienna.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Ribeiro is seeking joint legal custody of Sienna, while physical custody will remain with his wife. The documents also outline the couple's visitation plans; alternate weekends and Wednesday afternoons.
As Ribeiro’s marriage comes to an end, his professional career may or may not get a jolt with the Aug. 29 premiere of “Celebrity Duets,” a new reality show from FOX that pairs real singing stars with non-singing celebrities in a talent competition.
Ribeiro was revealed in a recent promo as one of the non-singers to be paired with a veteran. Smokey Robinson, Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan, Dionne Warwick, Macy Gray, Aaron Neville and Brian McKnight are among the previously announced professionals to take part in the show.
Each week, the celebrities will be paired with a different recording artist. The show will follow the pros’ mentoring of the stars each week as they choose songs and perform popular duets live in front of a panel of judges, a studio audience and television viewers. As previously reported, the series will premiere with a two-hour episode Tuesday, Aug. 29 (8:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT) on FOX (encoring Thursday, Aug. 31 8 to 10 p.m. ET/PT on FOX). Beginning Thursday, Sept. 7 (9-10 p.m.) “Celebrity Duets” will air live in its regular Thursday night time slot.

Tego Calderon Gears Up For Atlantic Records Debut
Posted at 8/11/2006 10:33:00 AM
Latin rap superstar Tego Calderon is gearing up to release his Atlantic Records debut, titled The Underdog/El Subestimado.Calderon, who is responsible for helping to break reggaeton in the US, will release his new album under his own Atlantic-distributed Jiggiri Records. When he inked the deal last year, he became the first artist in the Latin hip-hop field to ink a global pact with a major label.
"With the continuing creative and commercial explosion of new Latin music in the U.S., I am thrilled that one of its signature artists -- the brilliant Tego Calderón -- has joined the Atlantic family," said Atlantic Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman in April of 2005. "The reggaetón and Latin hip-hop movements are rapidly merging into the mainstream of American music and media, and Tego's innovative style, street credibility, and charismatic presence have already made him a cultural icon, placing him at the leading edge of the vibrant new urban-driven Latin scene. The signing of Tego is a proud moment in Atlantic history, signaling our enthusiasm and our long-term belief in this boundary-crossing music."
The artist himself has broken the US barrier, but will continue to represent his culture. Calderón describes his Atlantic debut as "a musical journey through the Afro-Caribbean culture." It will also showcase a unique fusion of elements taken from traditional bomba puertorriqueña, Jamaican reggae, blues, Cuban rumba, and New York salsa, according to the rapper.
The album will feature 22 tracks and one bonus, with collaborations with artists like Buju Banton, Eddie Dee & Voltio, Yandel, Chyno Nyno, Don Omar, and legendary salsa singer Oscar D'León, among others.
Some of the producers he worked with were DJ Nelson, Danny Fornaris, Major League, Salaam Remi, Erick Figueroa, Daniel Cruz & Eduardo Lobo, and Troyton Rami.
The first single for the Latin market will be "Los Maté," produced by DJ Nesty & Naldo. The Underdog/El Subestimado is slated to drop in the US August 29.

Pink Sticks Up For Rap
Posted at 8/11/2006 10:25:00 AM
The Sun reports Pink has responded to Tory party leader David Cameron's claim that rap music played by Radio 1 "encourages people to carry guns and knives." The 25-year-old said, "I'd love to know what he is basing that on. That's not the way to get to the kids. It's an easy stereotype – almost too easy. That's how they felt about The Beatles and Mick Jagger in the 1960s – that they were making the 'devil's music'."-article courtesy of RapDirt.Com

"Source" CEO Responds To Bankruptcy Petition, "Now We Can Move Forward"
Posted at 8/11/2006 10:16:00 AM
The Source magazine issued a press release today in an effort to assure the public that the magazine will continue to be released despite the company's recent bankruptcy struggles. SOHH.com spoke exclusively to Source CEO Jeremy Miller who revealed the magazine should be back on track in the coming months. Two weeks ago entertainment lawyer L.Londell McMillan teamed with two other parties in filing an involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition against The Source Enterprises. However, with bankruptcy proceedings currently underway, the magazine's Board of Directors, which is run by the Black Enterprise/Greenwich Street Corporate Growth Fund, are confident they'll be able to come out of the process on top.
"This actually brings an end to The Source's troubled financial past, which was created solely by the former owners. Now, it is our intention to do everything we can to successfully pull The Source through this so we can move forward," Chairman of the Board, Jeffrey Scott said via statement.
SOHH spoke exclusively with The Source President and CEO Jeremy Miller who replaced Dave Mays and Raymond "Benzino" Scott in January.
"The good thing is that as long as Black Enterprise/Greenwich Street does what they need to do in bankruptcy court the magazine is theirs to maintain. It's a positive thing. This actually frees us up to move forward," Miller told SOHH.
Miller also confirmed to SOHH that the bankruptcy proceedings initiated by McMillan were a direct result of his previous unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a partnership with Black Enterprise/Greenwich Street.
"He (McMillan) probably felt it would disrupt the company but actually it allows us to put the bad business behind us and move forward," Miller said.
Miller acknowledged that, with the August issue still two weeks from printing, the magazine has experienced some delays, however he anticipates The Source getting back on schedule within the next few months.
"It's a minor setback to be three weeks off schedule when so much has been going on. It could have been a lot worse from our perspective. We had hoped we could get the magazine back to business as usual within three or four months, instead it's been six to seven months. The problems we had as far as editorial credibility have been behind us since the March/April issues and now we can put the financial problems behind us and move forward on a permanent basis."
According to the press release issued today, every issue released under the new regime has sold between 60 - 80,000 additional copies on the newsstand. In regard to the newsstand sales, The Source is currently being audited by the Audit Bureau of Circulation, and anticipates full re-instatement by late September.
