Pharrell goes low-profile (Exclusive Interview)
Posted at 8/05/2006 07:57:00 AM
The words "low profile" and "Pharrell" rarely are in the same sentence. The über-cool songwriter and producer, half of the superduo production team The Neptunes, is arguably the most omnipresent hitmaker on Earth. His slightly off-key falsetto is heard on smashes for such artists as Jay-Z to Snoop Dogg to Justin Timberlake, while his sleek visage is featured in their videos.
He's fronted his punk/hip-hop hybrid group, N.E.R.D; has his own Billionaire Boys Club clothing line; his own skater-boy Ice Cream sneaker; and is the face of the luxury goods staple Louis Vuitton.
But Pharrell, 32, insists that his solo CD debut, "In My Mind," is a low-key affair -- despite the presence of superstars.
He explained the contradiction:
Q: This album has a lot of superstar cameos. Did you ever think of just putting out a record without the collaborations?
A: I got with people who understand what I was trying to do, something small and boutique. Something special that was to the left of everything else. If you think about your favorite artists, you think about their singles, there is always that one song on the album that you love, that's what I tried to do. I tried to make an album filled with those kind of records.
How does this project differ from the smashes you've written for others?
Just kind of like making records I ordinarily wouldn't do. I ordinarily wouldn't make R&B-ish records for myself. I probably wouldn't make rap records for myself. It's like putting Steven Spielberg in his own film. For me, it is more about the writing, the direction, the production and creating soundscapes for other artists. It's like a music makers' album and a fans' album. It's not a huge 10 million sales thing. I am not pop. I am not mainstream like that. As an artist, I am more underground.
Have you ever wanted to have that mainstream success for yourself?
I thought about it before, but it's too much of a headache. It's too much work. Interviews, all of the revealing things about it -- I ain't really into that.
So why put out a solo album at all?
Because it's for my fans. It's still going to be low-key. It's not going to be the biggest thing in the world. I'm not Usher or Beyonce or Jay-Z or Linkin Park. It's boutique, it really is. If it catches, it'll be great, but if not, it's meant for my fans. My fans go out and get it.

Green Lantern Co-Signs Mixtape Murda
Posted at 8/05/2006 07:42:00 AM
While some rappers catch plenty of bodies in their verses, DJ Green Lantern’s newest find intends to spell it out in no uncertain terms; it’s murder! Uncle Murda and his critically acclaimed DJ have aligned with The Mix Unit to supply us with ‘Say Uncle…2 Hard for Hip Hop.’ The twenty nine track mixtape includes traditional jacking-for-beats joints and eleven original songs, nine of which were produced by the neo-beat-smith, Green. He also mixed and arranged ‘Say Uncle.’Brooklyn representative Uncle Murda-the face of the “Gettin’ Money Gangstas”- has toiled in the underground for about seven years, generating a sizeable buzz via appearances on Cutmaster C’s ‘The Comeup’ mixtape series. Green has emerged as one of the most sought after mixer/producers by hosting and co-creating mixtapes like Beanie Sigel’s ‘Public Enemy #1,’ Jadakiss’ ‘The Champ is Here,’ and Tru Life’s ‘New New York, the Movement’.
Green Lantern was also instrumental in negotiating Tru Life’s deal with Jay-Z’s Roc La Familia imprint. He himself is signed to Russell Simmons Music Group/Def Jam Records. Green recently dropped his official “street album,” ‘Alive on Arrival.’ ‘Say Uncle…’ is available at www.mixunit.com.

Dan The Automator Puts Together Soundtrack For 'NBA 2K7'
Posted at 8/05/2006 07:24:00 AM
2K Sports, the company responsible for some of the most popular sports games on the market, has announced the release of the soundtrack for "NBA 2K7," which is an exclusive collection of tracks put together by producer Dan The Automator. The producer created beats for the soundtrack, which were tailor made for the likes of Fabolous, Mos Def, Ghostface, E-40, Slim Thug and even a remix of "Lyrics to Go," the classic hit by A Tribe Called Quest.
"It's cool to work on 'NBA 2K7' with 2K Sports. They have consistently made the best hoops videogame and produced by far the most diverse and representative video game soundtracks," said Dan the Automator. "Basketball has universal popularity in every city in America. "Dan's noted for his production skills, but he is also a huge sports fan with solid gaming skills. He gets it and brings it like few others."
One of the most prolific producers and remixers in the music industry, Dan the Automator achieved critical success in 1996 with Dr. Octagon, a classic collaboration with the Kool Keith. In 1999, Dan partnered up with heavyweight producer Prince Paul, releasing Handsome Boy Modeling School's Who's Your Girl? and in 2004 he released Handsome Boy Modeling School's White People.
The Automator has also worked with Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (on Deltron 3030), and in 2001, he attained international success with the multi-platinum debut Gorillaz album on Virgin Records.

MUSIC | VIDEOS | INTERVIEWS | NEW ARTIST | HOME"The Insider" Hits You With Shots to the Dome Piece
Posted at 8/04/2006 08:58:00 PM
"The Insider" - I am what most people in the "industry" call an"industry insider" who simply can't get into specifics. Why would an accomplished man like me waste away my time blogging? Good question. We here at the __________ Music Group want to make a hole in this online community thing kids are crazy about. We want to see how it works and how to buy it and sellit. What better way then to "blog" to you directly? Now enough about me, as I've almost blown my cover entirely, you bastards.
Let's start off by using this blog to continue the trend I've noticed while researching online hip hop...complaining. About famous people. Who you'll never meet. And who couldn't give a midget's ass about you. (It's true, I'm very famous myself. And I don't know you or care to know you.) In case you haven't been listening to the radio or bootlegging new music, this has been a down summer for hip hop. Since there's no good music to talk about, I'm going to swipe an idea I saw on Okayplayer.com yesterday (those bohemian women really like white men with money). Right now I'm going to be the A&R for the ENTIRE hip hop history (something I've dabbled in in real life from time to time) and I'm going to give pointers to some of the "best" in the industry who aren't doing monster things (peace to Tony Starks) right now.
Pharrell: Wow, let's Men in Black the 142,000+ peoplewho bought your album last week and pretend it never happened. Let's push those Ice Cream sandwiches and walk away from the solo career for a minute. Begin squeezing the label to drop the new Clipse album so you can regain some credibility, pronto. Hire that boy Gillie The Kid as a ghostwriter and hetero lifemate. Start the Timbaland Workout plan, 'cause you looked a lil' suspect in that "#1" Video. Tim and I do cardio on Monday's, Wedneday's and Friday's. He's built like an iron cougar who happens to make hit records. You can do it too, Skateboard.
Busta Rhymes: So "The Big Bang" didn't put up Curtis Jackson numbers like you and Dre had hoped for. Keep rocking the big stupid jewelry and you can start doing those Comcast adds with Mr. T to supplant your income until September. I imagine you guys still keep in touch after that "Courveisor" video from a few years ago. Plus he's a longtime fan of Leaders of the New School. I believe he penned the song "Just Another Case of the PTA" while enjoying his downtime from "A-Team."
Lupe Fiasco: Listen nerd, put away the AOL start-up discs and Manga comics and drop the damn album already! You nerds are so clumsy, you WOULD forget something like your debut album needs to come out. But you wouldn't forget to tape "Battlestar Galactica" or "Blossom." I like that "Kick, Push" song--it's very graphic. Someone said it's about roller skates or boogie boards but I know a gangsta rap/riot instructional song when I hear it. Touche, Lupe.
Lloyd Banks: You should probably do more ballads because you've been confusing your fans with these rap songs and "mixtapes." Women LOVED that first single you had a few years back about "7 Days" or "Fill Me Up" or whatever the hell it was. I don't know what happened to you since you came to America and started hanging out with 50 but you're REALLY isolating people with these non-singing songs. Get it together, man!
Lil' Kim: First off, I apologize for not visiting you in jail. I wasn't really busy. I just completely forgot you were locked up. My bad, ma. For your next album I'm hearing maybe a nice duet with Celine Dion about overcoming obstacles and snitching (something for "the hood" and for adult contemporary--you're not getting any younger, dear). Maybe a reunion track with Junior MAFIA. I'm sure they would be down for that, although getting all of them to take off from Applebee's on the same day does present a problem. Dammit, you're the Queen Bee! I'm sure the shift manager will understand.
The Game: Who's game? THE GAME! First I want to introduce you to my good friends at Konami (they'remaking a comeback--mark my words) and license your image and likeness for a PS3 video game based on your career this far. It will be called "The Game--The Game." Players get to be a nameless punk who gets shot to no great fanfare and who wills himself to get off that hospital bed, walk to Best Buy and purchase "Reasonable Doubt," "Straight Outta Compton," "Ready to Die," "All Eyez on Me," and "The Chronic," then name-drop said rappers for a legendary hop hop producer while securing a deal in the process. It'll be like "Grand Theft Auto" meets "Altered Beast"--PURE GOLD, BABY!
Lil' Jon--Jon, your music makes me want to rip off this cashmere v-neck and slap women. It's like driving my Ferrari with no seatbelt--pure danger! I have no complaints about your work or career. Your grills are my sunshine on a cloudy day. BRAVO!
Snoopy Dogg--Oh Calvin, my dear friend and close confidant: we're thinking about cross promoting your new album with some of the products you yourself have yet to attach your image, name and likeness to. For example, the Snoopy Dogg Spatula or the Snoopy Dogg Frozen Orange Juice. We'll talk about it at Evelyn's birthday part next week. You did get the invitation, right? Please, please, please leave Dat Nigga Daz home--it's very AWKWARD introducing him to my family and friends.
Mike Jones--Mike, I just want to ask you one question, and I'm sorry if it comes off rude or inconsiderate but...Are you mentally retarded? You remind me of that Timmy boy on "South Park." "TIMMY!" "MIKE JONES!" "TIMMY!" "MIKE JONES!"You can see why I'm concerened. Please get help. Well friends, that's all the Big Horse has for you this time. Keep logging in and reading more from "The Insider." That's me, Bridge Dyson by the way (not my real name--I'm very important).
Cheers.

Snoop Preps DVD Mag, Stocks for Youth Football
Posted at 8/04/2006 01:26:00 PM
Snoop Dogg and Tha Dogg Pound are launching a DVD magazine offering fans behind-the-scenes footage, as well as coverage of extended DPGC family and issues related to the urban community.“We want to stay in complete contact with our fans,” said producer/rapper Daz Dillinger.
“This is evident by the way we have our MySpace online, the way we are on tour with our fans is a clear indication that we are serious about fan appreciation; without them we wouldn’t be here. This DVD demonstrates our love to them and for them.”
Dogg Pound member Kurupt added: “The question I get most often is, ‘Who do you all think will be the next DPGC member or what songs are coming out next?’ This DVD will be the answer to the fans’ questions and actually to those who are interested in issues that [aren’t] covered by BET news and the regular news channel. It’s an array of things.”
Tha Dogg Pound DVD hits stores this month.
In other news, Snoop Dogg’s “Snoop Youth Football League” was presented with 10,000 shares of stock on Sunday from AmoroCorp (AORO) during a ceremony at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles.
AmoroCorp CEO Ephren Taylor, America’s youngest Black CEO of any public company at age 24, serves as Snoop’s financial advisor and manages the “Snoop Youth Football League” endowment.
The SYFL was founded by the Long Beach rapper in 2004 in order to make sports equipment and training available for all children.

Pitbull Takes Shots At Fidel Castro, "I'm Hoping He's Dead"
Posted at 8/04/2006 01:18:00 PM
Miami rapper Pitbull is celebrating that Cuban dictator Fidel Castro is no longer in power... so much so that he recently recorded the song "Ya Se Acabo" (It's Over) which he posted yesterday on his website and MySpace page.Pitbull, born Armando Pérez, is of Cuban descent; his latest song was inspired by the July 31st announcement that Cuban leader Fidel Castro had released power to his younger brother Raul Castro. Pitbull reportedly headed straight into the studio at 11:00 pm the evening of the 31st to record "Ya Se Acabo," which celebrates the change in power.
While Pitbull has expressed his political views in the past - having been a vocal in interviews about his opposition to Fidel Castro and even contributing to a New York Post essay criticizing the iconization of Che Guevara, the lyrics of "Ya Se Acabo" were clearly intended for the many Cuban-Americans who left Cuba behind rather than live under Castro's leadership.
The lyrics - rapped over an Afro Cuban beat include, "It's like a dream, now people can be free. No more 90-mile trips to the Keys. No more risking your life for freedom. I'm hoping he's dead because we don't need him." The chorus of the song alternates between chanting "Hasta Luego" (Goodbye) and "El tiempo tuyo ya pasó" (Your time has passed).
"Ya Se Acabo" is already receiving heavy airplay on Miami radio.
Pitbull is planning to release his next album El Mariel on September 12th. The album includes guest appearances from Twista, Mario and Diddy and production from Lil Jon, DJ Khaled, Mr. Collipark, Pharrell, Jim Jonson and the Diaz Bros. Pitbull took the title El Mariel from the place where 124,000 Cuban immigrants entered the U.S. onboard boats.
Pitbull also plans to release a Spanish language version of El Mariel with the three singles and twelve Spanish only tracks.
